Selling With No OS Loaded?

#1 Post by elite-elitist » Fri Jul 27, 2007 4:06 pm

If I want to sell a laptop with no OS loaded, how much do I stand to lose?

I once saw a T40 with no OS go for $320.

My factory partition is gone.

I don't really need a laptop, but could use the money.

If the COA is on the machine and it sure should be, then a new owner can purchase recovery CD's for about $50 - less if on ebay or a copy from someone. The COA is the key. If it is gone, the machine is worth a lot less. ... JDH

Is it a T40 that you are valuing?
What are the specs?
Also condition on a 1 to 10 scale or pictures would be a big help.

It's an R40. I would give it an 8/10. Today I had the description written up, and I was taking pictures. I was planning on putting in on eBay. However, when I was taking pictures it looked so nice I started having second thoughts.

If it still looks good to you and it's doing what you want, keep it.
They're not making them any better, just a bit faster.

If you've got a valid CoA, there's no reason not to sell it with the OS. Just install the very basics of the OS (using the key on the CoA) and then leave getting the recovery partition up to the buyer. You stand to make a lot more if you can sell it with a valid OS install than you do if the hard disk is blanked.
many apologies to our benevolent overload, BMurrow ;-)
