R40 hinge broken - seeking information on replacing it

#1 Post by J. E. Bennett » Fri Jul 27, 2007 9:09 pm

Hello there, everyone.

I bought a refurbished R40 seven months ago and have been very, very happy with it (so much so that I'll be picking up an R61 here very shortly).

About a week ago the silver/gray hinge by the hinge cap/wires connecting the monitor to the laptop body broke. Everything works fine, and I've been using the laptop as a desktop for the past while now.

However, I would like to either get this repaired or do it myself so that I can give the R40 to my fiancee. The trouble I am having is that I'm not sure where to go about finding the part number/ordering the replacement bit.

So, what information do I need to give and where do I need to go to get this solved?

Hi,

Welcome to the forum! Click here for the Hardware Maintenance Manual. Using your machine type (it's on a label on the underside of the TP, format is XXXX-XXX, letters and/or numbers, next to the serial #), you can look up any part number you need. It will also give you the part replacement procedures so you can see how it's done or if it's more than you feel comfortable with. Best of luck.

Hey there again,

With the cheapo R61 deal going bust, I've looked over the repair/disassembly instructions for the R40 again.

The only part of my hinges that is broken is the part connecting the LCD to the body, specifically the one shown on the left here

That being the case, I don't actually have to get into the guts of the computer to replace these, it appears?

Thank you all again for your help.

This link shows the exploded view of your R40's LCD. As you can see, the hinges go up both sides to the top of the LCD, so you'll have to "get into the guts" of that, at least.
