R52 - cant hotswap my 2nd HDD Ultrabay adapter (with hdd in)

#1 Post by indessen » Sat Jul 28, 2007 12:18 am

Hello,
I have a TP R52 with Windows XP SP2 installed, also AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition, Norton System Work (Norton Protection Center, Protected Recycle Bin), just thought I'd mention those.

When I boot on normal HDD, I am able to insert the 2nd hard drive adapter (ultrabay) with a HDD in it and it recognise it fine... and I can access it. Yet, if I want to remove it "hot", no matter how long I wait (incl. till drive powers down), it wont let me remove it: system message that a programm is still accessing the drive.

I can remove the CD/RW fine, when it is in.

Anyone have a clue?

Alex

Hi Alex,
I don't know for sure but the most likely suspect on your list is the Norton System works. I haven't used that in years but I remember when I did it was pretty aggressive about protecting the recycle bin against inadvertent file deletions. Since Windows usually puts a Recycle Bin on ALL hard drives attached to a system, even temporarily, Norton might be guarding it zealously. You could try suspending it or shutting it down and see if it makes any difference. Best of luck. By the way, I sure do LOVE my R52.

.... I did actually try that a couple of weeks ago... no luck. But, your mentioning it gives me the idea that perhaps I should install a fresh XP version without any extra software installed and see if that makes a difference...
Love my R52 as well, but only after I installed the fancontrol and had the damm Chicony keyboard swapped for an NMB. ;)
