Realtek 8180 Wireless LAN card - Setup

#1 Post by oldbob » Sat Jul 28, 2007 10:30 am

My T-21 Thinkpad is setup as a dual-boot Win98SE & PCLinuxOS 0.93a Junior. At the local library, Win98SE connects automatically, open the browser and I'm online.

With PCLinux I "started" very close, the yellow & green LEDs were on and I had five green "bars" and a green circle. BUT when I opened either browser [SeaMonkey 1.1.1 and Konqueror 3.5.3] I could not get online.

Note: When I first started, SeaMonkey did connect ONE TIME, but when I rebooted my notebook the connect was gone forever !!!

"Not knowing what I was doing" [I didn't know if the library was a LAN or "wireless"] I started changing all the settings. Now, I'm getting the message, "Unable to autodetect wireless interface" and on bootup I have a screen "Choose a profile "Default" - "OCL-W". And the yellow & green LEDs never light !!! I tried to undo my changes but went from "bad to worse".

I need "major help" to undo my mistakes and get to a "auto-logon" condition.

Unfortunately, I'm not very familiar with PCLinux, but if it's anything like Ubuntu or Debian then a dhclient eth1 (or whatever your wireless is being detected as) in the terminal/konsole may help. It should auto detect the library configuration and give you a starting point.

truk,

Thanks for response. I have reinstalled PClinuxOS and have undone most of my screw-ups.

The library wireless site again shows a "green circle" and five bars.
So it looks like I have a "valid" signal.

The latests problem is when I open the Konquerer browser I get the message, "an error occurred while loading" !!!

That should help w/that too, unless u have an IP address already assigned and we can eliminate that as a problem.

truk,

A final note to let you know that I am in the local library and I'm online using PClinuxOS !!!

Don't know "exactly" what I did, but I ran all the commands that people suggested and they all produced data.

Entered Control Center and it showed the five green bars but next to "OC Library" instead of a green circle there was a two-piece plug that was connected together.

Thanks again, for your interest & help.
