T40 battery melt down???

#1 Post by Reo51St » Mon Jul 30, 2007 11:13 am

Why do so many of the T40 batteries start to melt at one location on the battery???

Is this an engineering defect that is under recall or is it just being over looked???

The component that is over heating is “ti BQ29311, 3-, 4-Cell Lithium-ion Protection ic For Use With BQ2083/5”.

Any answers or comments???

Thanks.

One of the reasons I ask this is that when I turn off power on the power strip that I have my AC adapter connected to and let it sit for more than a few days the battery drops lower than 50% sometimes down to 0%.

This means that my cycle rate goes up real fast. I can pull out my battery and feel where it is getting real hot and on some of my batteries the plastic is melting.

This can’t be safe???

Any help or comments please.

well do you put the system to sleep or turn it off completely? If it goes to sleep then yeah it will use some power to keep the devices in their low powered state. If it's completely off then that's a problem..

it is also a problem for the battery to get like that irregardless of whatever you do with it. It should never get like that. Did you check to see if your battery was recalled (top of this forum) if it is send it to Lenovo and they'll replace it, if it's not still call them up as i'm sure they don't want another exploding battery situation on their hands.

I do a shutdown, wait for the laptop to power down then turn off my power strip.

I can even then remove my battery and two or three days later that same spot is hot and the battery will drain. It is easy to find the spot as the plastic on some of the batteries is begining to get discolored and worp.

This is mainly on the extended battery like 92P1013.

Will check the recall thanks.

That is NOT normal battery behaviour for a T4x. You might want to check out this Lenovo battery recal web site.....
