First looks at Asus Eee PC

#1 Post by syedj » Mon Jul 30, 2007 10:20 pm

Take a look at the following review of ultralight (read ultra cheap) Linux running Asus Eee PC

http://www.hothardware.com/Articles/Han ... _ASUS_Eee/

In my opinion the lack of storage might be an issue but other than it looks and sounds like an interesting toy. I wonder if the solid state storage device will be upgradeable with after market parts.

P.S. This time its not a scam that I am inadvertently promoting :)

The three hour battery life is a bit less than I'd like, but then again it's around what my X21 used to do. At close to two pounds, you'd better believe I'm getting one!

The plastic hinges on the back remind me of the old Compaq laptops....where they would separate and click everytime you opened the laptop...

Would it kill them to make the screen a litttttle bit larger?

There is a 10" screen size model available as well.

Improving the various components will certainly result in higher prices and losing their huge price advantage over UMPCs. This way they are directly in competition with OLPC and Intel's Classmate laptop. Also, perhaps increasing the screen might negate their target market as well, just my thoughts.

Yea, I understand they've got to keep the costs down to compete in that segment.

What size screen is pictured? I don't see any mention of it.

With a larger screen (well, and a trackpoint) I'd buy one in a second to replace my T23.

That presumably refers to the 710m. I had the Inspiron 700m (virtually identical to the 710m) whose keys were smaller than the X series' but still big enough for fast typing. I love my Axim x51v PDA but its lack of a keyboard is a big problem for taking notes from lectures. I am really tempted to replace it with this $199 Asus laptop. One can run Windows XP Pro on it, right?

Yes. Asustek has said that it designed Eee with Windows XP in mind, but to keep the costs down used Xandros instead.

It's kind of sad that this little thing has more USB ports than a lot of much more expensive laptops.

And with their flash hard drives, they boot much faster too!

I remember reading something like 15 seconds boot time for the Linux image.; pretty amazing if it actually happens.

Yes -- but there is more real estate available on the case given that it does not have an expansion card (ExpressCard or CardBus) slot, or an extended battery. The USB chipset on the X61, for example, would support four ports, but there is only physically room for three.

Perhaps it's time to bring back the UltraPort...
