Anybody else having problems with logging into eBay?

#1 Post by rkawakami » Tue Jul 31, 2007 2:21 am

Seems like eBay is not letting me log in. No system announcements have been made to indicate any problems (but they're kind of slow on that anyway). System glitch? Hacked account?

Now that was scary!

Live Help indicated that my account was flagged as it appeared that somebody tried logging in with the wrong password too many times. I was searching some listings and attempted to add an auction to my watch list when the sign-in page popped up asking to confirm my ID and password. This usually happens after I've been logged in for awhile. I entered my password and eBay said it was invalid. Made sure my caps lock key was off and tried again, but still no luck. Waited a couple of minutes and tried again. Still invalid. Panic starting to set in... Tried to confirm my personal information online and STILL was denied access. Pull up the main eBay page, find the Live Help button and wait for a few minutes until an operator was available. After about 10 minutes (answering all of the same questions and realizing that my phone number had recently been changed), I was given a temporary password. The operator indicated that it did not appear that anybody got access to my account (confirmed by checking my ID at the "Items by Bidder" link). Whew!

edit: Now I can't get webmail.aol.com to load! ARrrghhh.....

Problem appears to be resolved for now with eBay. I've been able to log in and out of the system without any issues.

It was very strange (and frightening) to be told that the password I've used for a couple of years was invalid. My mind was racing thinking about any emails that I might have opened or sites that I recently went to, that could have deposited a keylogger onto my system. Did several scans and came up empty while I was doing the Live Chat with the eBay support person.

As I was going through eBay's help system today concerning what the policy is for a seller who says that an error (typo) was made in the listing that was not caught until the auction was over, I happened to click on the "Contact Us" link and was surprised to see a phone number. Supposedly it only appears to members that have been "invited to participate" and I was told several times during the call not to give out the number. It seems like eBay is running a beta program for phone support as I was asked to complete a two-question survey after talking to the agent ("how satisfied were you with the phone support system" and "rate the agent's helpfulness"; both were "5" - very satisfied). The phone number DOES appear in a Google search so some people have already blabbed.

I'm still having problems accessing my AOL mail with a browser but that appears to be AOL's fault. The site has been down since last night. Using the normal AOL 9.0 program, I can get to my mail but I can't get webmail.aol.com to load.

I'm glad your problems are mostly solved Ray, it is a shock when you are suddenly denied entrance to your daily places. Just a suggestion, but have you ever tried dragging all of your email accounts into Outlook or Eudora to read?

Another data point on the eBay account access problem:

https://esnipe08.esnipe.com/SiteNews/st ... arty1.aspx

It seems like eBay is getting hit with some "third-party access" issues. Not sure if this is really related to people using eSnipe or general hacker activity.

As far as AOL is concerned, I was able to sign in via webmail.aol.com once last night, but couldn't again afterwards (or this morning). As AOL has a proprietary email system I don't think it can be tied into Outlook, Agent, Eudora or any other general email software.
