Constant running fan on T23

#1 Post by ambientscape » Tue Jul 31, 2007 3:20 am

My T23 had been acting weird after few years. The fan has been running non-stop even its not on any application. Anyone with the similar problems?? Should I disassemble the fan for some thermal?

As in a concurrent thread, download MobileMeter and monitor your CPU temps. If it's always above 65-70C, even when the system is idling, then it's probably time to renew the thermal grease between the heatsink and CPU.

This is probably the 20th time I've asked on the forum, but are you running TPFanControl?

I think Pentium III-M would be pointless with tpfancontrol to manage the cooling. I think its just need some new grease as mr. Ray suggest and DITTO...the temperature hitting the 65 degrees.

What's your reasoning behind that??

Without it, my T23 will sit at 60C and up, and yes I've applied thermal compound. Under stress, it'll operate above 70C, and that's plain retarded.

Using TPFan, I keep my system between 30-40C at idle, and no higher than 65C under 100% CPU.

ThinkPad Fan Control Settings

#6 Post by dav1129 » Wed Aug 01, 2007 3:47 am

@ dsigma6

I have just starting using TP Fan Control after my T23 started cutting out after I replaced the CCFL lamp in the LCD and put it together again without reapplying thermal grease to the CPU).

The CPU was sitting up around 67C and obviously escalating much higher for the thermal protection to kick in.

I have since reapplied some thermal grease and left to the BIOS things are much better - no thermal cut out yet, sitting w at around 50C or less at idle ithout TP Fan Control

Nonetheless, not really understanding it, I would still like to understand how the TPFan Control Levels work so I could tweak the INI file to keep my system like yours, between 30-40C at idle and no higher than 65C under 100%CPU OR is there some way to patch the BIOS to do the same WITHOUT running TP Fan Contol?

Much obliged if you can reply and in particular tell me what levels you are using for your T23 to achieve those temperatures. Thanks

Keep in mind, if the system stays that cool (or attempts to stay that cool), the fan will be on quite a bit.

The fan noise doesn't bother me, so I put it on 6 or 7 @ 40 C

40C- Fan level 06 or 07
65C Fan level 06 or 07
75C- Fan level 128 (BIOS Controlled)

I believe that's how I have mine set up, but I can check later. I don't mess around with a ton of different fan values- I just want it on or off.

Try level 64 if you REALLY need some cooling (I wouldn't keep it there for too long though)

edit: I can just send you my .ini file if you'd like.

TP Fan INI File

@ dsigma6,

yes I'd be interested to receive it as you have almost the identical machine and temperature range I think would be good. I also don't mind the fan noise.

please email it to me.

other update to current BIOS and EC, which I just have any ideas on a permanent fix?

BTW way did read in another thread perhaps that you have 1GB in your T23? If so, did it make an improvement over say 512MB as I currently have? I thinking of replacing the RAM now that it's a little cheaper. Thanks
