RFID-problems with T20

#1 Post by shinsaku » Sat Oct 23, 2004 8:47 am

The used T20 that I've received yesterday (eBay purchase) is giving me some trouble. When I switched it on the first time, everything seemed to be okay, but after rebooting Windows 2000, the error message "0189: Invalid RFID configuration information area" is being displayed. From what I've found on the Internet, this error message is related to some eeprom write failure, so that the checksum is invalid.

Clearing the RFID flag inside of the BIOS doesn't help, just as reverting to standard settings. The IBM website seems to suggest that the system board has to be replaced, but I've found out that if I press <ESC> on receiving the message, the boot progress continues, and everything works, as far as I can tell.

So, my question is: Can I just ignore the error message and learn to live with it, or do I have to be afraid of any consequences by ignoring it?

Thank you for your input!

CMOS battery? It is cheap to try first.

Update: For some reason, the error message has disappeared. I thought that I anything that might have caused that, but upon further reflection it might be possible that just by booting from the IBM Maintenance Disk (I didn't touch anything in the menues) the corrupted eeprom information was finally rewritten correctly. I'm curious if it will last, though...

Just to say that I had this appear on a T20 also W2K about two weeks ago, mine lasted about a week before mysteriously disappearing.
It came when I installed MS security patches, and it also
went when I installed one, but this has to be a coincidence. Surely?

Pressing escape got me out of it each time - as I'm sure you know.

When the problem was happening, the UUID shown in the BIOS was reporting as all FF's, but once it fixed itself the UUID looked like a valid string of hex numbers.

I haven't tried changing the CMOS battery.

Similar problem

I had to replace a motherboard on a T23, and when I did, I also got this 0189 error. Thankfully I read this forum and found out that I was able to overcome it by pressing Esc (Duh, should've thought of it but didn't).

Anyway, I updated the BIOS and updated patches, but it's still there. I suppose it could go away (similar to other users' experiences) and I could probably live with it, but does anyone know how to solve this problem once and for all?

Thanks.

It is "usually" a system board issue.

I'm trying to remember several years back, but I think there was a BIOS issue at one time that caused the 0189 error to set - unfortunately I also think that the IBM approved solution was to replace the system board.

At this point, the TP is working to I am not going to worry about it too much. Earlier posts mentioned that the problem eventually went away, but my experience is that it is still there after a month or so.

What I am hoping is that the problem won't affect my ability to use the computer over the long-term, especially since I got the replacement MOBO from eBay and the seller has warranteed it for 2 months.
