T60 maximum RAM

#1 Post by earl » Tue Jul 31, 2007 12:35 pm

Hi,

I've looked all over Lenovo's website and also emailed tech support (who have kindly ignored the email for 2 weeks) and I can't find the answer: how much RAM will my system support?

I have a 8741-4GU Lenovo Thinkpad T60.

If anyone has either a pointer to the docs or the answer, I'd be grateful.

Cheers,

Earl

The answer is as simple as 3G (1G+2G).

Earl,

Welcome to the forum.

Windows XP will only utilize 3gb. I have 2 X 2gb in my T60p and 3gb is what is recognized. The BIOS states I have 4gb.

Vista is supposed to recognize all 4gb. I cannot confirm though as I have not tried this yet.

Probably a patch wouldn't do or the patch would have been out already. Seems like a big job or a small job, like I mentioned, would have already been done.

XP has been out since the end of 2001 so what seems simple is probably not.

The T60 will only use 3GB, no matter the OS. The T61 can use 4GB with a 64-bit OS (Windows or Linux).

Which is better?
2x 1Gbyte or 1x 1Gbyte+1x 2Gbyte?
What about dual channel ram?

Better depends on your priorities. If you want blazing speed, use matched sticks of RAM and you'll get an 8% to 10% boost over one stick.

1GB+1GB will run a little faster than 1GB+2GB until you start to use that third GB of RAM, at which point the first machine would start swapping.

You can put in two 2GB sticks. You'll only be able to use 3GB of that memory, but it will run at the faster speed. Only you can say whether that is worthwhile for you, depending on your need or desire for speed and your budget.
