Actually on the regular IBM site the 2379-DXU is $2529. You must be going through some discount site such as the discover card?

Also there is tax in all 50 states.

Info from IBM site:

Since IBM is incorporated in all 50 states it must (by law) charge your state's sales tax % on your purchases as well as any associated shipping charges. At this time, we can not accept tax-exempt orders on our site (We plan to accept them in the near future), or specific, entitled discounts. However, just call us at 1-888-SHOP-IBM (1-888-746-7426) and we'll help you place your tax-exempt order, or ensure that you receive your entitled discounts.

Yeah notice on the top left that is the Discover card site. You need to pay with a discover card for that discount to be valid.

No, that says that they collect sales tax in the states that require it.

In those states where no sales tax is charged, e.g. DE, OR, IBM doesn't collect it.

No tax in Oregon. Oregon has no state sales tax. I got the order down to the point of the last click & there was no tax.

Just placed my order for the 2379-DXU @ a grand total of $2149.65. I paid with a Visa card on the Discover Card page. They may kick it back but so far so good! Got my order confirmation. We'll see if it sticks.

Shouldn't be a problem using VISA on the Discover page because VISA page has same price:

Thanks guys! Thanks to this link, I'm returning my T41P and getting a T42P.

:D

THIS is why

Here's what I had before:
T41P: 2373-GGU: $3400
Pentium -M 1.7ghz (Banias)
512mb PC-2700 (upgraded to 1gb)
60gb 7200rpm hdd
14.1" SXGA+ screen
CD-RW/DVD combo drive
802.11b NIC (upgraded to 802.11ABG)

plus an ultraslim thin hdd caddy for a 40gb 5400 rpm that I had on hand.

Here's what I'm getting now.
T42P: 2379-DYU
Pentium -M 1.8ghz (745 Dothan)
512mb PC-2700 (will pull the 512 from the T41 to make 1gb.
80gb 5400 rpm (will replace the 40gb 5400 rpm in the ultraslim hdd caddy)
15" UXGA screen
2x DVD-RW
802.11ABG NIC

Final price w/ same warranty(3 year onsite 9x5 next day): $3079.

With that difference, I'm going to buy a 60gb 7200rpm drive for the OS.

And, in close relation to this, I'm going to celebrate my excellent fortune today (laptop deal here, + other great news) by keeping my X31.

So, now because of this, IT GETS AN UPGRADE TOO!!

here's how I was planning to sell the X31:
Pentium -M 1.4ghz (Banias)
512mb PC-2700
40gb 4200rpm hdd
12.1" XGA screen
802.11b NIC (pulled from T41P)

here's how I'll be keeping the system!
Pentium -M 1.4ghz (Banias)
512mb PC-2700
40gb 5400 rpm hdd
12.1" XGA screen
802.11ABG NIC.

So, I'm back to where I started on the X31.

The to do list now shows:
0. Live VERY frugally for the next 2 weeks as I've maxed out my credit cards and need to wait for the refund. ($1800 on the #1 card, $1600 on the #2 card...these will be credited when the T41P is returned. However, I just put $400 on the #2 card, $2000 on the #3 card, and 700 on the #4 card to cover the T42P).
1. Reload the custom Ghost image to replace the X31's factory image, and get email & Trillian working on it by tonight.
2. Enjoy the T41P this weekend.
3. Reload the factory image onto the T41P on Monday. (pull my 512mb PC2700 from the T41P)
4. Ship off the T41P on Tuesday
5. Sell the 40gb 4200 rpm hdd that will be left over.
6. Buy a 60gb 7200rpm laptop drive.
7. Twiddle my thumbs for a couple weeks until I get the T42P.
8. Receive the T42P, reload with a custom install.
9. PROFIT!
