Your comments please on the hot bottom of T23 vs T20 and T40

#1 Post by Rahula » Sat Oct 23, 2004 4:26 pm

Would you like to comment on the heat from the bottom of the T23, compared with the T20 or T40?

Recently I bought a 4 year old T20 from eBay, which is good in many ways, except that the aging LCD has lost its brightness, which is taxing on my aging eyes. Also, when put on my lap, it gets unbearably hot after one hour of web surfing and word processing. The hottest is outside the cpu comparment; the RAM area is less hot, while the HDD is only like a warm handshake. As I use the laptop on my lap at lot, the heat problem is important.

There is now on eBay a T23 at a "Buy Now" price of $650 and, presumably, the newer LCD would be brighter than mine. But, because it has a cpu of 1.13 GB compared to my 700 MB, my main concern is whether the T23's bottom gets hotter than my present T20.

The T40's with centrino presumably get less hot than the T20, but I will have to wait for the day when a used T40 falls below $1,000 in order to get one.

I would appreciate your comments on the heat from the T23 compared with other T series Thinkpads. Thanking you in advance.

I can't add a comparison, but I can say that my new T42 seems to run extremely cool, almost all the time. It's a 1.7 Pentium M Dothan.

I use it in my lap all the time, and even when runnng general programs, it doesn't even begin to get hot enough to be uncomfortable.

According to mobile meter, it never seems to run much hotter than 50c.

I have never directly compared my T21 and my T23 but they both seem to get hot. I just felt under my T23 that has been on for a while and it is very hot under the pcmcia slots where I have a wireless card installed.

Well, you're just about there, at least on eBay. I just picked up a 6 month old T40 1.5 Centrino w/1gig memory & other goodies for under $1100 shipped. Ready to go, almost mint, fast, flawless. Quiet, hardly any semblance of heat. BIG difference from my trusty 600E Pent II 400, which I still love!

You may be able to do as well here in the conferences.

My T41p actually runs extremely cool, I was amazed after the problems I read some people have. It's about as warm running games as my T30 is running Firefox...

And when I use the T41p for word processing and such, well... As I'm typing this, Mobilemeter shows me CPU temperature at 42.0 and HDD at 28.0 degrees.
