High pitched noise from AC Adapter

#1 Post by spune » Tue Jul 31, 2007 5:12 pm

It seems like there are a lot of people who are experiencing this problem. I just received my ThinkPad X61s and also have the same problem. I called IBM Support (1-800-426-7378) and they'll gladly send me a new AC Adapter tomorrow.

For those of you who requested a new AC Adapter, did it fix this issue?

I got my new one today (after calling on Sunday) and it's totally silent. I think there was a bad batch of new ones - the original was a 'Revision E' and the new one they sent was a 'Revision D'

I just told the CSR I received my ThinkPad today and I noticed a high pitched noise produced by the AC Adapter. Then he said he'll ship a new one out tomorrow. Nothing else was said. :o

Same here. "Would you like a replacement AC Adapter?" Why, yes, I sure would! ;)

My new AC adapter (revision D) no longer squeels like a pig.

Lenovo is not requiring to send the old/squeeling (revision E) adapter back to them.

I submitted a request online through the ESC+, and they quickly approved a replacement. I guess since a lot of people are calling about this problem they are just replacing them no questions asked.
Ordered X61s on 5/31, delivered 7/31

I had the same problem with my X60s adapter, but only to learn later that it was not the adapter but rather strange power supply in the house - there were big voltage drops and everytime that happened, the adapter made high pitch noise. I now have two good adapters :)

They sent me the more expensive 90W power adapter. Although it's slightly larger and heavier than the older 65W one.

I wouldn't be too happy about that. I'd ask for the smaller 65W adapter. There is no advantage to a 90W adapter and it is bigger and heavier - not something I want to travel with. Kind of defeats the purpose of an ultraportable notebook if the adapter is huge.

Doesn't the 90W charge faster?

Surprisingly, NO!

The battery is limited to be able to accept a certain rate of charge. This max charge rate is provided by the 65W adapter so the 90W adapter has no advantage...for the X60s at least.

A more power-hungry machine (like a T-series) can get use out of a 90W adapter since you can max out the battery charge rate (around 30W I think) while the notebook is using another 35W+.

I just called up IBM and they will be sending me the 65W model. However, it's currently out of stock so I'm not sure how long I'll have to wait. :(

Just called. Backordered for my x61s. The rep said 5-7 days until they can ship one to me.
