T40 ultrabay devices not not showing up in my computer

#1 Post by rambling annie » Tue Jul 31, 2007 5:14 pm

Neither my ultrabay HDD or CD/DVD-rom are showing up in My Computer or anywhere else, yet the green light is coming on and in the case of the CD/DVD I can hear it working when a disc is in but then nothing!

The refurbished T40 has been opened up on a couple of occasions - once because the original CD/DVD-rom bay was jammed in whe I got it (well glued in as it turned out!) It's running on XP. The bay was working intermitently for a while - but you had to boot with the a disc already in. But now - nothing apart from the green light. Any suggestions? Where do I start? Could it be a loose connection even though it's lighting up?

Thanks! Annie :)

I vote that you have a hardware problem, and the drive was glued in because the locking assembly is busted. (That also senses the drive.)

always check for the correct drivers..
that machine might have a generic windows OS on it..

i agree that its strange that the UB device was glued in..

i would begin to wonder about where i got it..
and what warranty from the seller there might be..

Hi guys and thanks for all suggestions so far.

The machine is running a genuine XP, as far as I know the factory installed - it's got all the think pad bits on and a license number which MSe happy with

The devices (HDD and CD/DVD-rom) seem to install firmly and positively - they feel like they've locked into place.

This fault seemed to happen gradually over a period of about four months and I wasn't changing the drives over either I was just using the CD.DVD.

I haven't really done anything to software, as far as I can remember, other than the usual firewall/antivirus updates and I've tried shutting the firewall down. Is there anything I could check though?

There is a warranty but, although these guys are a major seller/refurbisher in the UK, they don't seem particularly helpful and say I must return at my expense and pay £70 if they decide it's not faulty! So I guess I want to have a go at all the obvious things first rather than put myself in their hands!

Any suggestions about things I could try would be really helpful and much and much appreciated. I'm quite good with computers as long as the instructions aren't too technical.

I know how to take it apart more or less from the downloadable service manual. Could it possibly be a loose connection even though the green light comes on?

Bill you're a wonder!

I've just re-read your advice, enabled the IBM update feature, and it's all working great now. Thanks so much! You've just saved me £100 and a whole load of hassle.
