MEETUPS? Houston, TX, Dallas, TX & Austin, TX

#1 Post by crashnburn » Tue Jul 31, 2007 5:47 pm

I am wondering why we do not have LOCAL MEETUPs forum / section.

Can we create one of those?

Anyone interested in setting up meetups in any of these cities let me know. I travel through them quite frequently.

I'd say for such a well represented community we have almost no means to ENCOURAGE & FACILITATE in person meetings.

You are a senior member here. Why cant we muster a MEETUP section and people who want to meet?

One of the reasons Bill requires a location is to foster a sense of community here, but I'm not sure whether a specific Meetups conference is something we want to pursue. We'll talk about it and see.

This reminds me of the YouTube "As One" meetings, such as the last one on 7/7/07

what constitutes a meetup section..?

in the past there were local user groups that would hold meetings..

and of course, the homebrew computer club was one of the first dedicated to computers..

so is this some sort of group thing or a one on one thing..?

A picture of a plethora of TPs arranged like a school photo would make a fine desktop background! :D And the trading parts idea would most certainly be worthwhile!

Seriously though, it'd be interesting meeting some more of you...but, I doubt that anyone would want to come up here to the middle of nowhere....

my toughts were to begin small and create a "meetup coordinator" and confrence wherein to gauge interest in local meetings..
and if sufficient interest exists, move forward with a meeting..

compare notes with other users, help one another in person..

perhaps lenovo could be pursuaded to supply a speaker or software or hardware support person to help local thinkpad owners with small problems..

the speaker could talk about upcoming products or plans that don't violate any NDA's..

perhaps offer a small discount to attendee's..

the first such meetup would need to be located where there are many forum members..
and attendance would need to be limited to forum members..
at least at first..

i'm open to suggestions.. :)

HoFo - One the most successful user communities online. Regular user meetups organized by people themselves. But a dedicated subforum area where such meetups are organized.

Wow Bill.. I was not thinking that far .. speaker et al. More casual meet & network with your fellow ThinkPad lovers. Simple...

There are zillions of cell phone users and TP owners.. But the enthusiasts on HoFo meet.. and show, tell, talk, share stories.. about cells and non-cell things.

Should we not encourage TP lovers to do the same? But a SECTION on the forums that ENCOURAGES, ENABLES and CHRONICLES the in person meetings & experiences.

HoFo users in GTA seem big on meeting up. I never understood, but whatever. HoFo could use some of our moderators though.

I agree with that. The moderators here are much more 'professional' compared to HoFo where there's a wider variety of them.

But, of course we need a SECTION on the forum that FOSTERS in person meetings.
