Which Wireless card for T42?

#1 Post by sagara » Wed Aug 01, 2007 5:30 am

A friend has just bought a T42 off ebay, and it's listed as 'wireless upgradeable', which I assume implies that it has the fitted antenna and all it needs is a MPCI wireless card. There are two on ebay and I'm wondering which would be best:

1. Atheros AR5004G 802.11 b/g

or

2. Atheros AR5004X 802.11 a/b/g (about £5 more expensive)

Thanks

Generally you'd prefer an IBM card for less hassle, otherwise you need the no1802 hack to make other cards work.

Obviously the AR5004X is better, but the only time I've ever used type-A wireless was at home with a matching router, so whether you need it is debatable.

I forgot to mention that the seller claims that these cards are IBM cards specifically for the T40 series, as well as the R50 series, and gives their FRU nos. The AR5004X is FRU: 39T0355. So there should be be no error messages :?

If you don't mind the extra cash, get AR5004X. Otherwise if you don't need 802.11a, get the AR5004G.
