Nokia N770 tablet

Hi,

Has anyone used N770 tablet? If so, how was the experience?

According to Wikipedia they are generally slow and pretty inadequate in the long run but I guess it all depends on what one wants to do with them.

Works great for internet surfing. That's why I bought it. I sold my Palm Tx because I have other Palms for pim work.

The Nokia is limited though. Google reviews on it. No PIM, or doing any Word or spreadsheet work. The os is Linux so there may be open sourced programs to install. It's a cute little device with a 800x480 4.1" lcd screen with full page and zoom in/out features. Has an audio and video player and pdf reader built in also

For $120, it's great. What can I say........

I have one of these, it's great as a "coffee table" style device; when you just want to look something up quickly in the lounge room, and not want to go fetch your PC/laptop.. e.g. check the weather, TV guide, internet banking balances, pay a bill I just got in the mail, local news headlines, quick glimpse of any new mail, etc.

The browser is a little slow and limited; don't expect great rendering times on structurally complex pages. Turning the Flash plug-in off, and enabling a pagefile on the flash card, makes things a lot smoother. (A 64MB flash card is bundled with the device) Apparently the newer (and much more expensive) Nokia 800 tablet is better in this regard.

It deals with pages >800px very gracefully; the browser is Opera-based which "magically" makes wide pages fit within the screen boundaries.

The handwriting recognition is hopeless (worse than an original Newton, IMO) -- the on-screen keyboard is fine enough, though.

There is a port of rdesktop (RDC client) on it, but I've found it to be very unstable. There's also an app called "MCE Guru" in development for it, which looks to be a fantastic remote control for a Windows Media Centre.

I bought mine cheap from eBay for about US$120. For the tasks I use it for, I don't think paying much more than that is justified..

I just played with a friend's 770 earlier this week, and I'll second the comments here. It's really an Internet tablet only, don't expect other PDA functionality. But for that, it easily connects to a wireless network, and the browser is quite decent. A larger RS-MMC card would make it more useful, and those are quite inexpensive now.

The form factor is quite impressive -- in spite of an identical (?) screen size, it's much smaller than a PSP, and weighs less than half of the PSP. The Debian Linux platform has many possibilities for enhancements -- including the CarMan ODB-II analyzer -- and I do like the industrial design. Finally, now that it has been replaced by the N800, the price is very, very nice.

I think it's a great little tablet for internet surfing. The interface is easy to change, and granted it's in Linux so there is a slight learning curve, but it depends what you want to do and change. The 770 goes in standby mode when you take off the cover and you're ready to get on the internet! Check out Internet Tablet Talk, a web site just for machines like the 770 and 800. I updated the RS-MMC card from 64 to 512mg and now I have plenty of extra storage. Nice machine.
