This afternoon I allowed ThinkVantage update to install several seemingly routine updates .. several tens of megabytes worth, finger print sw, power mgr and others I can't recall. Nor can I now find out - see below.
On boot I then saw the Win XP logo and horizontal moving bar, but then instead of the desktop the screen went blank. Disk activity continued for some minutes so it may be that boot up processing is continuing.
The screen works fine if I boot the recovery partition or go into the BIOS; it just blanks in the XP boot process as described.
My system is a Z60m with Win XP Home SP2.
I then tried safe boot with the VGA option. That worked and I was able to do a re-installation of the ATI software from earlier this year, which was fortunately sitting on my disk.
I post this as a warning; take care when taking the latest updates offered by ThinkVantage for a Z60m!
Was this cause and effect? Was there something else about my system that led the updates to cause this problem?
I will probably never know.
