My z61t died with burning smell

#1 Post by deodeo » Wed Aug 01, 2007 5:52 pm

It suddenly shut off when I was using it in my office this morning. There was some buring smell coming out of the cooling vent close to the power jack. After that, neigther the AC power indicator nor the battery indicator would light up. I figured, there must be something burned on the system board. Does anyone have similar experience?

My z61t is under one year depot warranty by EZserv. I don't dare to send it to them since I heard a lot of complains of their service. Is there any way that I can send my thinkpad directly to the Lenovo repair shop? Thanks.

No, you'll have to let EasyServ attempt to repair it first.

Lenovo does not deal with warranty services, it's IBM that provides these warranty support and services under 5 years agreement between the two groups.

If you meant IBM authorized repair center then no you cannot send them your thinkpad, nevertheless you can deal with them but you have to find such center in your area and then take the notebook with you in person to them. You probably might have to wait in line there too.

Keep in mind, these repair centers usually call EasyServ (a.k.a Solectron) to send a pickup box which is the same thing that an end user does instead of asking for parts to be sent at their location. So even though Solectron has some dark horror stories attached under it's belt but comparatively it's still a superior choice.

man... that's a rough situation.

let us know if you figure out what might have caused it, so we can avoid the same fate.

I don't know what happened. I was typing in Word while I had both AC adaptor and 7-cell battery plugged in. The machine just suddenly shut off. Then I tried to push the power button to turn it back on, but no response. And I realized something badly happened since I noticed that both AC adaptor indicator and battery indicator did not light up even I had both of them still plugged in. I immediately unplugged everything, and take a close look of the laptop. No visible damage, but have fairly strong burning smell coming out of the cooling vent besides the power jack.

Anyway, I called Lenovo and they will send me the shipping box soon. Hope it would not be messed up by Ezserv.

There is an IBM authorized repair service center near where I live. They will repair most Thinkpads under warranty. Just do a google on IBM Thinkpad warranty repair centers.

The one I'm thinking of is located in Torrance, CA.

Do you have any experience with them? Same mail-in hassle though.

No experience, I just found it and thought I'd offer it as an alternative.

I must be very luck this time. My dead z61t was picked up last thirsday by DHL, and came back on monday. That was unbelievable! On the receipt they said the "Planar card" was replaced and BIOS refreshed. Everything works great now.

IBM/lenovo work together to strive excellence for it's customers. I truly hope customers here reluctant in sending out their machines to repair services will be glad to see another one of these pleasant repair experiences.

On a sidenote Planar Card is Motherboard in IBM's terminology.
