TP570e - 0189 and 0271 errors - any fix?

I recently acquired a 570e running Windows 2000.

At boot up I get 0189 and 0271 errors.

I have searched the archives/internet and established that :

- 0189 error: invalid RFID configuration information area. The EEPROM checksum is not correct.

- 0271 error: Date and time error. Time and date not set. Run BIOS setup utility.

I am NOT getting any 161/163 errors which usually indicates a dead CMOS battery.

It appears that the EEPROM is corrupted. The UUID is just a string of ffff's rather than hex numbers.

Thankfully its possible to continue the boot process by simply pressing "Esc" when the 0189 error appears. Win 2000 then starts up and the 570e seems to work OK.

After setting the time/date in BIOS , the 0271 error "temporarily" disappears if I reboot. However , if I disconnect the power supply , the 0271 error reappears together with the 0189 error.

I have checked the archives but I have not found a definitive fix. Suggestions included:

- flash BIOS with older/newer version [but my main battery is dead , so official flash proceedure is not possible.

- replace CMOS battery (but I don't get 161/163 error?)

- just boot from an IBM Hardware Maintenance disk - no further action required.

- use Hardware Maintenance disk to create a new UUID

- just carry on using the 570e and the problem might eventually disappear (wishful thinking!!)

Has anybody any thoughts on the best way to resolve the 0189/0271 errors?

Welcome aboard!!

The 0271 error can be the sign of a bad CMOS battery as well. I get the same error on my T23's when I remove the CMOS batteries. Furthermore, since you stated that you remove the AC adapter and the error comes back, means that there is nothing there to maintain that information.

I would just try to replace it, since they are so cheap.

EDIT: One question, when you set the date and time, and reboot (without removing the AC Power) does the other error go away too?

I will replace the CMOS battery. I have some CR2025's so I can "rebuild" the original.

Unfortunately , the 0189 error always remains when I reboot after setting the time/date.

Hopefully , somebody will have come across the 0189 error before and know the correct fix.

Do NOT solder to the CMOS battery. Use tape or have a shop like Batteries Plus use their spot welder. Getting the battery hot can make it catch fire (unlikely) or drastically reduce its lifespan.

Second, I'd initialize the BIOS settings.

I have some 2025's with solder tags on so I will use those - thanks for the tip.

How do I initialize the BIOS settings? Is this the same as pressing F9 (I think) for "Default settings" ??

I've never had a 570, but the 600 series has EZSetup. There's a big button that says Initialize. If EZSetup is not there, setting defaults would be the other option.
