CD/DVD Rom works fine in Dos but not in Windows

#1 Post by Lars » Thu Aug 02, 2007 4:18 pm

Windows XP Pro SP2. T 23.
Optical drive is labeled as HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8081N.

The drive used to work fine also in Windows. But since some time Windows reports that it can not load the drivers for it.
This T23 belongs to a friend of mine.

I swapped it for mine, a Hitachi. The GDR... works fine in my T23, running W2K. But my Hitachi drive does not work in my friends T23.
The problem is obviously a Windows quirk, but what could it be?

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the drive to no avail. I have reinstalled Windows on top, but the problem remains.

It *may* have started when my friend installed ITunes.

Any suggestions welcome.

I had a problem with the windows trackpoint drivers kicking in about a month ago (except in XP). If you have not done it already, physically remove the drive and reboot the computer. Then remove any trace of the drive from the device manager, and any utilities that may have come with it (make sure you are showing hidden devices also). Boot at least once more without the drive to make sure the drivers are unloaded from the system. Then reinstall the drive. If that doesn't work, try removing ITunes.

Thank you. I had already tried that though. Fortunately I had a Ghost image of the C-partition from when I had first set it up. I reloaded that one and now it works fine again.
