Dead T30???

#1 Post by SuperW2 » Fri Aug 03, 2007 4:07 pm

Hi...new guy around here and Thinkpad newbie. We are a Dell/HP Shop and have never really worked on or supported IBM or Lenovo Thinkpads before.

I received a T30 from a customer that I was asked to wipe the HD and then could use to redeploy if necessary. The customer said the unit was in normal operating condition, he just wanted to DoD wipe the unti so his data was gone. The unit was shipped, but packaged very well from damage and possible static.

I went to turn on the unit and cannot get it to power up.

No Fans, No Beeps, no HD spin up or Hd Light and I only receive the 4 Lights, which come on for about a 2 count then just the far right Power Light stays on green and the battery light. I have attempted with AC and battery/AC no battery, Battery only, all do the same.

I have searched and read some of this forum, have tried multiple memory configs in both/either slot individually as well as pushing in where the Video Chip might be located.

2 or 3 times, while on battery only (I'm pretty sure) the screen slowly starts filling with thin multicolor vertical lines filling the whole screen (and then would go away when battery popped out.)

I removed the KB, checked for anything rattling around and removed and reseated the CPU/Fan (and tried a different CPU) with no change in the results. Also swapped HD's with a new one with no change.

So... is there anything else to try, or is this just a Dead System Board and should be headed to the "scrap" pile?

Thanks in Advance
SW2

To be honest, I wonder why you're going to so much trouble and getting so involved when you're specialized in Dell/HP. If this had been my customer, I would have informed him that the computer wouldn't start and thus the HD could not be wiped.

But from my (limited) experience with a T21, and if you really want to get into work, I'd suggest pulling the mainboard and reseating the connector to the I/O board. That appears to be a weak point and could be giving display problems.

Otherwise I unfortunately have no suggestions - except if you want/need to scrap the mainboard, send it to me instead. I have plenty of time to play with such things.
