What is it with thinkpads and FAN ERROR ??

A bunch of thinkpads in our group (T4x, T3x) deeveloped fan errors in their fourth year.
How common is this ?

HP NC8000 UXGA; Dell Precision M90 WUXGA; R50P UXGA
