Processor Upgrade

Hi Guys,

I have an aging Thinkpad R40e with a 2Ghz Celeron processor which is constantly slowing down as software has moved on my poor old thinkpad's hardware hasn't. I think the problem I have is my Celeron processor as it slows down seriously just doing the simplest of things, such as play an MP3 and posting on a forum and im watching the text appear after I have typed it hehe, I have tried everything to speed it up and totally optimized windows so I suspect my processor is on it's way out.

I have found a P4 Skt 423 Mobile on Ebay but it's only a 1.5Ghz, would I notice any improvement by switching from a Celeron 2Ghz to a P4 1.5Ghz oh am I better sticking with what i've got?

Sounds like to me all of your ram is being consumed by some crappy, poorly written application. Are you using iTunes? How much ram do you have available? Open up taskmanager via control alt delete. I think you need to format and reinstall if you can't figure out your problem.

You may have to reinstall Windows.

If you do upgrade... maybe try upgrading the RAM first before making a CPU swap. It would be the easiest thing to do. I don't know if a 1.5GHz would make a difference or not.

A hard drive upgrade especially if you are using a slower 4200RPM drive can work wonders. A 7200RPM is nice if you can swing it.

Even a Celeron should be able to handle that. It sounds like there is junk slowing it down.

Before spending money I would try reinstalling Windows.
