Looking for XP Pro x64 drivers

#1 Post by glcraig » Sat Aug 04, 2007 2:41 pm

I took original delivery of the T61 with Vista Ultimate (x32). I have then done a test build with both Vista Business x64 and XP Pro x64 (2003). At this point I am committing to the XP x64 OS. I get my full 4GB of memory and it has a much smaller memory footprint than Vista. After several months (on a couple of different computers) -- there is little about Vista that I need or want.

OK, now for the challenge. Lenovo does not support XP x64 in its usual driver downloads -- so collecting drivers has been a challenge. I have the display, both Ethernet and Wireless and Firewire all happy. My challenge right now is the audio driver.
The SoundMax Integrated Digital HD Audio driver seems to indicate it supports XP x64 -- however it fails to install. I suspect that the MS UAA driver is not properly installed.

Does anyone have a pointer to getting audio configured for XP Pro x64?

BTW, went to Intel for both 3100 Media Accelerator driver, Pro/1000 ethernet, and 4965AGN drivers.

I plan to be doing this when my t61p comes in because the CAD applications i use are not vista friendly. I have seen them use 16gb of ram before (at the time it was 8gb ram and 8 gb page file on a desktop) so i have to have 64 bit to prevent me from running out of page/ram. does anyone have any pointers on the install when it comes in? i would very much appreciate it.

Sugo,

Thx. Yes I definitely went down this path. This seemed like a good hit. It turns out this UAA patch was included in SP2 (Win XP x64) -- and so: 1) was already applied in my case and 2) the microsoft patch recognizes it is already applies and refuses to reapply.

Solved! Thanks to Dennis Shum for providing the following:

What I had to do to get the audio driver to load was to run the following steps:

1. Load Windows Xp X64 Sp1 os.
2. Load Mircosoft Audio X64 Patch http://support.microsoft.com/kb/901105

<< In my case I had Win XP x64 with SP2 -- already has MS audio patch applied. So I just continued from step 3. >>

3. Load the Lenovo Vista Audio Driver
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-67821
4. Go to Device Manager
5. Select on the Audio device and right click to update the driver
6. Update your Audio driver by browsing to c:\drivers\vista\Audio
\AMD64\VISTA
7. Reboot your machine then it will ask you to load the HDA modem driver
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-61454
(Again, access / install by manually going to device manager, updating driver and pointing to the 64bit Vista driver)

So bottom line appears to be, at least some of the time, the 64 Vista drivers do support XP Pro x64. However, most of the "install.exe / setup.exe" provided for the friendlier install likely will fails (with OS checks). (Further having set up this identical machine with Vista Business x64 with great success via Lenovo driver site -- there is hope!)

sweet, this is going to come in use on friday when my thinkpad arrives. What other drivers did you have trouble with glcraig? is video driver using windows generic crap or actual nvidia? the reason i ask is because I need the nvidia driver to be supported for openGL on autoCAD and Solidworks.
