Is there a worty T6x alternative out there?

#1 Post by propellen » Sat Aug 04, 2007 3:03 pm

Hi,

There is no doubt that I love my T60, but i'm getting quite annoyed with whole heat issue...
Does an alternative laptop exist with similar build and keyboard?

Thanks.

Sincerely,
propellen

:D

I've tried the T61 and its not much more quiet imo.
I was thinking of a whole other brand. Not a MAC though..

I think the business-class HP laptops are very good. I would buy one if I had not been able to get a new Thinkpad.

Yes, the HP business series seems good.
They are at least really quiet. They have a bunch of them at my office. What is negative with them is the screen and the keyboard.

You have very limited options because few brands still make 14.1" SXGA+ laptops. How about the Panasonic Y5, which is 14.1" SXGA+ and has an internal optical drive but weighs almost two pounds lighter than the T60!

Agreed. Panasonic is the only alternative to me if you want a well-built laptop. You can find some here:

X60t - 6363-A7G - NMB - Sanyo[8]
T60p - 2007-83G - TMD - NMB - Sanyo (9)/Panasonic(6)
T43p - 2668-G4G - Hydis - NMB - Sanyo

IMHO there is no notebook available similar to thinkpads build quality and keyboard touch. Your answer to heat issue is T61 and your answer to fan noise is still T61.

I have seen all T61/p in person except T61's 15.4 model and found the fan barely audible on them, I am not sure which model you saw and how further quiet you desire your machine to be.

HP is now the most popular machine in my firm (five years ago, it was Thinkpads).

Having tried some of my colleagues' HP machines, the screen quality is only average, but there again, as a T43p flexiview user, any other screen is always going to be no better than average.

The HP keyboards are also only average but yet (and I still cannot believe I would ever find myself saying this) noticeably better than the keyboard on my new T60 which is very, very, very poor.

my T60 is very quiet now.
got fan replaced this week, and I feel it works excellent.
CPU temp is always around 45.
GPU temp is around 65. I know, GPU is alittle bit hight, but fan is stll running quietly. well, I am thinking to get another fan and DIY the thermal pads with other kind of stuff.

Why did you get a fan replacement? What was wrong with it?

That GPU temp sounds normal to me.

They should last longer than that. They should run 24/7 for years . Must have been a defective fan.

I think the HP business stuff (nc series, new p series) are worthy competitors to the ThinkPad. They are very well thought out and nicely built.

The Dell Dx20/x30 machines are good machines that will get the job done, but I feel their design is not yet up to ThinkPad level.

You're absolutely right about the Dells. I don't expect my D620 work PC to last more than a year, seriously. Plus the keyboard and their 'trackpoint' are garbage.
