As a longtime ThinkPad user, fanatic .... well you get the picture, I too was very disappointed when the stripes were gone. After all I thought that was a key design element, that caused the Thinkpad to be a bit unique in the styling department while still remaining businesslike.

Then after a few weeks of using my T60 with it's all black mouse buttons, and suffering from headaches, I finally went to the doctor. Thankfully after much testing and dialog he asked "are you using a T60? Why yes I am. He suggested I go back to my T42, which I did and presto.....no more headaches. And to think you naysayers aren't convinced of the critical function of the stripes.
