Wireless upgrade...

#1 Post by Stevesoura » Mon Aug 06, 2007 8:21 pm

Hello, How is everyone? I was trying to do some research on some wireless wifi mini pci. I hope I state those right. Right now I have a T41 2373-3HU with only a Intel 802.11b wireless(MPCI). I wanted to see what other upgrades i can do for my T41. I saw a couple of post with Atheros. I checked on ebay and saw a couple of them going for a great price but was not sure if any of them were compatible. Are most wifi mini pci universal? Please point me out in the right direction. Thanks

Ok guys, I got in the Atheros AR5004G and installed in my T41. Everything seems good, but im not sure if im using the right drivers. When I go to device manager and look up the wifi hardware. The driver is named: Ekahau. Im not sure if this is the right driver or not. The Atheros does not run as smooth as I thought. Every five minutes or so It would have a hard time loading web pages. The page would say it timed out. I think this might have something to do with the card because my wife's laptop has no porblems when I check.

The following software must be updated when you install this package.

* Access Connections version 4.11 or later
* Hotkey Features for Windows 98/Me/NT/2K/XP version 1.22.0512 or later

Ok guys, I'm having some frustrating times with the wireless. I did and installed what Harryc wanted to me to do with the post above. I still have the same problem I did before. It shows that my wireless connection is excellent. Very often when surfing the net it will work fine for 5 minutes but then crashes for only 30 to 2 minutes. The page says "The connection has timed out". After repeat refresh, it will work fine for another five to ten minutes. With all this going, it will still say excellent connection. I have searched everywhere on google with no luck.

Bad card, loose antenna connection at the card, defective router... have you tried a firmware upgrade on the router or have you tried swapping the router? Take the machine down to another access point (Starbucks for example) and see if it works there.

What is the IBM part number of the card you bought (eg 73P4301)? Some of the later cards (designed specifically for the T43) behave a little funky in the older T40s and T41s.

yeah that's very weird about all that. I use an Atheros also and i have zero problems with mine in a T42. How about trying to let Windows manage your wifi and not the access connections program and see how that works.

Ok I have replaced the atheros with the original b card. The part number says FRU: 39T0384.

Yep, that's one of the funky ones! I had a 39T0355 - it functioned great, in terms of connectivity, in my former T40 but Fn-F5 wouldn't work no matter what I did (and I tried everything)!

Your problem sounds a little different but, given the "funkies" with these later cards, who knows?

yeah that was a funkie atheros card. I guess it will work allot better on the T43's. I installed the original one and is working flawlessly since then. Thanks for all your help guys, and if you are interested in the card, please pm me. If Sktn77a is right(which I think he is), it should work fine on the T43's. Thanks again

I'm in the same boat as 'ibmthinkpad99'. I'm looking to put in an IBM Atheros card into my T41.

I realize that the following two FRU part numbers may be considered one of the "funkies":

39T0355
39T0384

The 'dragon_on_the_edge" eBay seller seems to be selling the IBM Atheros cards with one of several FRUs:

27K9944

39T0073

39T0355 (funky)

39T0384 (funky)

39T0081

93P4262

91P7416

93P3475

With all the above FRU's which ones are the "funkies"?

Thanks!
