RnR and HDD partitions

#1 Post by pipspeak » Tue Aug 07, 2007 11:19 pm

I am the proud owned of a corrupted registry and might have to rebuild my T43 but have a quick question anout RnR and partitioned drives.

I seem to recall from a former recovery that RnR restores the factory image/last backup to the c:/preload partition, leaving all other primary/logical partitions untouched. Is this correct?

If so, it would be a boon to me because all my personal files (that I haven't backed up for a few weeks, tsk tsk) are in another partition.

If you da a factory restore your harddrive will be wiped out.

If you do a restore from a backup only the partion which you previously backuped will be restored leaving all other partitions untouched.

It depends on the type of RnR restore option selected.

If you select the "restore my entire system" and the backup only contains say C: then only that gets restored but the other partitions get wiped out (I know, I've tried it).

If you take the more selective option then the other partitions seem untouched.

for some reason i have to do factory wipe out first and then use start up disk to do restore from back up. so in my case its always full formating.

Just did a full factory restore and my other partition was untouched. From RnR's emergency diagnisos screen (because Windows wouldn't start) I opted to do a full restore of the factory image (the last option I believe) and did not select any "save/rescue files" options.

I was asked what partition on the hard drive to restore Windows to and selected C. After it did its thing (which took forever and involved reformatting the C partition) my other primary partition was still intact with all the files still there. The only problem was that the DVD drive letter had been switched with my other primary partition (so DVD used to be D: and is now E:)

It's just one more reason for me to partition my HDD. I always have programs in C: and all personal files and data on E:
