I'm the new Owner of T60!!! Educate me about my T60
Ok, I got this used T60 in Like New condition. Almost perfect. I had T23 years ago and then sold it. No laptop for 2 years. Now I'm so excited with this T60. It's very fast with Vista and very well built quality as always. WOW Can you all here me now?
I have some questions to ask to all Thinkpad experts here...Sorry for the long post...I thank you all in advance very much!!!
My T60 Specs:
Model: 2007-66U
Latest BIOS 2.16 (updated)
Warranty '09
Vista Premium 32-bit (original XP Pro SP2)
T2500 (2GHz)
2GB RAM (original 1GB)
100GB 5400rpm HD14.1in 1400x1050 LCD,
Hydis 14.1-inch SXGA+ - FRU 13N7061
128MB ATI Mobility RADEON X1400
ALPS Keyboard - Fru 39T7118
Hitachi-LG CDRW/DVD,
Intel 802.11abg wireless
Bluetooth/Modem, 1Gb Ethernet
Panasonic 6-cell battery
Secure Chip
Since I'm new to T60, I would like to know everything about T60.
What's new? What's changed? Known issues? Any Tips using T60?
Here are my questions.
1. Are there any useful 3-party softwares/utility for T60? besides the pre-installed IBM softwares? Where can I download them?
Where can I donwload software to read GPU Temp and fan speed?
2. How can I order NMB keyboard? I hear that NBM is the best. My T60 is still under warranty, can Levono send me a replacement for free if I request it?
3. How to use Secure Chip? (not really sure what's for?)
4. How do you use infared/Bluetooth? Not sure what Infared is for. Where do you guys use Bluetooth? I have never used Bluetooth yet...
5. These two softwares: are they worth keeping? I'm not sure what's it does.
Thinkvantage system migration assisstant
Client security solution
6. Is there any way to increased the sound level? besides the Windows sound mixer/application being used. Listening to DVD - seems low at max. Getting a direction from GPS Street & Trips 2007 - very low at max. extremely hard to hear in a very quite environment.
I apologize for the long questions. I don't know where else I can ask.
thank you guys!!!

not sure what migration assistant is used for so i just got rid of it. I would highly recommand you keep the client security software if you want to make back ups
Search is your freind.. your answers can all be found on this forum and Google.
Briefly,
Infrared is used to transfer data between computers. It must be enabled in the BIOS, and set up in your Control Panel. When another system comes in range, you'll be automatically prompted with options.
Bluetooth is a wireless communications standard used primarily interfacing with cell phones, headphones, and mice.
There are TWO volume controls on your thinkpad, and they work in tandem. The round volume buttons at the top of your keyboard, and the speaker icon at the bottom right of your desktop (in the traybar). If you don't see the speaker icon, you can enable it via Start->Control Panel->Sound
You cannot order an NMB keyboard for the T60 from Lenovo. You have to find it somewhere else. Again, search this forum.
Look here for information on Thinkpad fan control utility.

Infrared and Bluetooth are short-distance wireless communication methods. I use one or both for synchronizing my PDA(s). You can use them for keyboards, mice, printers, cell phones, cameras and other toys.gredodenda wrote:4. How do you use infared/Bluetooth? Not sure what Infared is for. I think the system migration assistant is for migrating your files and settings from one ThinkPad to another. Windows also has a tool for that, but it may not transfer thinkpad-specific settings.

Nope - that hasn't worked for the T60 line. You'll get a Chicony keyboard instead, re-labeled with a NMB part number sticker. Apathy is on the rise, but nobody seems to care.
I may be hampered by my location (UK) which is hardly the hub of the TP community, but I've spent hours and hours and hours trying to hunt down a genuine NMB keyboard for my T60.
Until I found the very useful links shown in the post above, I was spolit without even knowing it, because both my older machines both came with genuine NMBs and I rather naively assumed that this was the only type of keyboard which came with TPs.
Two seemingly very knowledgeable sources in the UK have both independently told me that the hunt for a genuine/original NMB for a T6X is as good as pointless. One, who sells second hand parts, reckons he's been asked over 100 times for an NMB and he hasn't yet even come across one single NMB to sell, let alone 100 of them.
As someone who is not classically trained, but belongs to the enthusiastic speed-thumping school of typing, my speed has completely gone when typing on my new T60. If time is of the essence, I am reverting to my beloved T43p instead.
Would any of the more knowledgable members be able to help. If I widened my search to a US keyboard (rather than the UK version I really want), might I stand any more luck in trying to find an NMB or would this be just as fruitless.
At this time, I am not only very disappointed with the keyboard/palmrest on my T60 (which detracts from all of the other good bits) but I am more than a little bemused. Have I misunderstood when I say that the keyboards are being downgraded ? If this is indeed the case, then what kind of lunatic would sanction the downgrading of the "legendary" TP keyboard ?
Am rather a bit cheesed off and disappointed with my T60. Ironically, I was wondering only about the aesthetics and removal of the stripes but, having taken delivery, I prefer the no stripe version. I never, for a moment, thought that, of all things, I would be disappointed with typing functionality.

Can I simply swap out my T5500 CPU in my 1953CTO T60 with a T5600? Or my T2400 core duo in my 2623D6U T60?
