TPFanControl vs SPeedFan temps don't match

I'm comparing Thinkpad Fan Control with SpeedFan. The temperatures don't match up. I'm guessing that SpeedFan doesn't know how to properly decode the thermal values.

There is a lot of things to read. First, for Core (2) Duo, it's possible to read directly the thermal diodes form the CPU or a sensor locateted nearby the CPU on most laptop. Some also make the average of both core temp.

I suppose Speed Fan reads temp directly from each core and from the HDD smart status. The two other one can be errors or wrong reads.

You can try Core Temp or Intel TAT to do some cross compare. Everest is also able to repport some temps. RightMark CPU can also repport CPU temp.

I run RightMark CPU and TPfancontrol. Both tells the same temp for the CPU. TPfancontrol brings the temp of the first core.

I'm really worried about the Temp1 readingin Speedfan. I can't relate it to a specific component, except that SpeedFan calls it ACPI Temperature (don't know what that exactly means).

Under XP, Temp1 hovers around 63C, but under Vista64 Temp1 starts off around 63C and gradually moves up to 92C - OUCH!

I'm worried that it may be either the chipset or the GPU getting that hot, but I can't find any utility that gives me those temps under Vista64.

You can use ATI tools to read the GPU temps. I think the last one runs fine with Windows Vista. When monitoring software read wrong place, it leads to eratic and jumping values. On my desktop, a fan was reported to run from 0 to 10 000 rpm. But in your case, 63 to 90°C can be the GPU temp. Windows Vista use pixel shader if you run Aero Glass. It makes the GPU more hot because it uses 3D fonctions while Windows XP only use 2D features. You can also try Windows Vista with Windows 2K theme. It should only use 2D basics fonctions and did not lead to such high temps.


PS : Did you see your GPU reaching about 90°C just after some 3D applications such 3D Mark or ATI tools stress test ?
