T4x Prevention of GPU problems

#1 Post by Zangetsu17 » Wed Aug 08, 2007 7:44 pm

Hey all

I've been searching on the forum ways to prevent the loosening GPU problem. The main preventive measure is to hold the computer with two hands and to not hold it by the corners. Are there others?

My bag that I will use with the T41 I will buy holds the laptop sideways.

Here is the case I will use.

ANy other methods?[/url]
Thanks for all the information. it is greatly appreciated.

Looks like a good bag to me.

The main way to prevent GPU damage is to handle your machine correctly.

Don't pick it up by the corners. This causes motherboard flex and is well documented throughout this forum.
Don't drop it. This goes without saying.
Don't loan it tome clumsy friends. "Sorry man" doesn't help anything.

I love my T41p and treat it like a baby. This way I can ensure it's continued use for years to come.

Temetka is right. Don't flex it or loan it to friends (they will flex it and drop it) and you will be OK. The bag looks fine.

The only complication is that when you ask a friend or relative to be "careful" or "hold the computer with both hands" they give you a look that you won't soon forget. Treating electronics with care doesn't come naturally for a lot of people.

My TP is like a body extension, and it's for personal use, as my credit card.
I'm so close to it that friends will think twice before hoping to use it.

By the other way, I don't understand that regarding the way of holding it. When I take it from a table or so, I don't press so firmly to reach the motherboard. Why or how is that so terrible?

Thanks for post. I did not know that the GPU was a problem area, but looking up links in this forum points to it being the cause of very recent problem with T41, which, fortunately, was repaired under warranty.

It's not even convenient to pick it up straight up by the corner. If I ever need to carry my Thinkpad when it's open, in one hand, I pick it up by the top of the LCD.

I use the standard waiter/waitress technique to carry around the system when the lid is raised: open palm underneath the middle bottom of the laptop, fingers curled up behind the back panel. To get it into this position, lift by the open lid or slide my hand under from the front middle or the sides. Never grab a corner and pick up the entire system that way.

@Melvyn: The reasoning behind the warning about holding any laptop by just one corner is that it tends to flex the motherboard. It's not that you are squeezing the case hard enough to squish the motherboard; it's allowing the weight of the laptop to bend the motherboard. This can cause parts to become disconnected; the GPU being one of them.

That sounds very reasonable. :? My sleeve is vertical. I liked it because I can put the laptop there and there's some space to breath. Usually I left the fan side up. Now, I'm scared. It's dangerous?

Ha, ha, ha! I thought I was the only one receiving these "unforgettable sights"! You people are right: Let's take a lot of care of our babies. In my case, both of them costed me a lot of money (I live in Sout America) and a lot of weeks of hard working in order to save for buying them.

Best regards,
Enrique

Is there anything rigid in the rucksack you're using to stop the fabric from bending when you bend your back? If you put the rucksack in a planes overhead compartment will it take the pressure of other passengers jaming their bags on top of it?
I love rucksacks but I've yet to find one I'd put my T42 in. It looks a bit retro but I now use an aluminium case. This rigid case also provides me with a solid platform to rest the TP on (better than my lap). I don't care so much about style, knowing my TP is safe is what keeps me happy.
