Is upgrading T23 to 1GB RAM worth it ??
Hello. I own an IBM ThinkPad T23. It has 512mb with 20GB HDD. I have Juno Dial-Up Turbo (5X). If I upgrade to 1GB RAM, will my internet access & loading pages be much faster? Thanks!

No, not really. Although a browser like Firefox is memory-hungry, I don't think it will take up any more than a 100MB. Then you would have to be running several more programs before disk swapping would take place. Installing a second 512MB memory module would help you run programs concurrently but it definitely would not speed up your data transfer rate over the dial-up line.

I agree with Ray, as always. I have 1024mg installed in my T23 and the extra ram doesn't speed up my Broadband internet access. But, it feels good to be maxed out!!rkawakami wrote:No, not really. If you get a Live CD version of Accelerated Knoppix (Linux), boot it from your CD drive and check out the speed you may be interested in switching to Knoppix and meeting the 1GB minimum for Knoppix to create a RAM DISC, load itself into and run from RAM. I'll bet you never saw a full blown O/S run that fast.Big_Bruce wrote:Hello. I own an IBM ThinkPad T23. If I upgrade to 1GB RAM, will my internet access & loading pages be much faster? Thanks!
The newest versions of the top Live Distros of Linux auto load up in a T23 just fine. All of them that came out from May to July ship with the same auto loader and auto hardware identifier. They correctly set up my friend's dial up and my broadband connection & were ready to go as soon as the distros were ready for use. ([censored] Small Linux, Archie, Devil Linux, Knoppix, Accelerated Knoppix, Unbuntu, Xubuntu, SuSe, Feather Linux) You can order them professionally burned on CD (some on DVD-RW) for under $2 each at linuxcd.org

Hello,
One Gig will only be interesting if you plan to use multiple applications at once. It can speed up some applications, for example, if you use a program like Paint Shop Pro, if you apply filters, it will be done in less time, but I think that's all.
If you know how to keep your PC clean, if you don't have a ton of bloatware in the RAM, then 512 MB is really OK.
If you use Firefox, you could try this tip, to minimize memory usage :

In response to the original question is there any gain to installingWarMachine wrote: If you know how to keep your PC clean, if you don't have a ton of bloatware in the RAM, then 512 MB is really OK.
1024mb ram in a T23, the answer is 'yes'.
Of course, if all one does with a 512mb T23 is type and read e-books, do email, 512 will work fine. All the users I know who do that are over age 60
I do not come across many people today, under 60, who do not
run more than one program at a time, own a digital camera, or
use photo or graphics programs.
Most users can see significant performance boost from just adding 128 or 256mb ram to a 512mb T23.
My T23 (2 of them) came with 256mb. I saw a clear boost when
I upgraded to 512 and additional gain from 768. I finally went
to 1gig when I dual installed Win 2000 Pro SP4 & Accelerated Knoppix in one T23. I also see a clear boost to many things
I do in Win 2000 mode (burning CDs, DVDs, & multi-tasking.)
Many users can benefit from a gig of Ram in a T23. Whether
it is necessary depends. For one thing, many people do run one or
more programs, bloated or not, simultaneously.
Linux users benefit if they use a Linux distro such as Accelerated Knoppix that can auto load to run entirely from RAM. I am sure many owners use their T23 to edit photographs. Photo and graphic editing goes significantly faster with a gig of Ram. If you play CDs, listen to internet radio or streaming newscasts run smoothly and fast with a gig.
Do you need more than 512? Some do not. Do you benefit from
a gig? Some do not but many will.
My 84 year old Mother-In-Law is happy with the 256mb T23 she uses for a typewriter and for an Internet post office.
