Memory compatibility.................

#1 Post by sktn77a » Thu Aug 09, 2007 9:23 am

More for morbid curiosity than anything else............. but the memory I have in my thinkpads (T41/T42) appears to be either 4 chips/side (both sides, ie 8 in total/SODIMM) or 8, smaller, chips per side (ie 16 in total/SODIMM). All appear to work fine but is there any significance to the difference?

eBay guides for high/low density memory modules:

My overall impression (from what I could remember) is that the modules with more chips(a.k.a low-density memory modules) on both sides are more compatible for older laptops, therefore they are more expensive due to their higher demands.

Thanks, that confirmed what I thought. Fortunately, they all seem to work on the T4x. :D

I read OP and follow the reply link. I consider correct to read http://reviews.ebay.com/MythBUSTED-Dens ... 0003939852

By my own: if your memory is PC2700 (for T42) it doesn't matter how many banks (chip for you) does it have at each rank (side for you). A typical stick have 4 banks, 2 ranks.

Usually you can see 4 banks (chips) at one side and another four banks at the another side or 4 banks at one side and clean at the another side. That give an wrong perception, because usually is the same bank (chip) that you can see from both sides (it have more depth).

Don't worry about how many banks (chips again), if you're going to buy a new memory you must take care of memory type according to your machine. Some others have low latency, diferent timings and so on, but that's out of topic.
