Screen take time to be visible

#1 Post by ludox » Thu Aug 09, 2007 1:32 pm

Since some boot, my T21 screen is black at boot and I can't see the boot sequence, It appear often when Login is asked.

And sometimes I see the login window but very dark.

The problem is often resolved when I pull and push my screen.

I thought that the contact button of closed screen was perhaps the cause but it could be a problem of light.

Once launched, no problem.

Have you advice before I open it to clean and look at connectors ?

It could possibly be a bad inverter, but since you mention that pushing and pulling on the screen can make it come on-that points to a bad LCD cable.

Is it a 13.3" or the 14.1" screen?
I lost count...

It is the 13.3".

I 've seen a compaq where cable was cut and make bad contact.

I thought that Thinkpad were better in this point.

Th cable could be out of his connector ?

For whatever reason-and it doesn't make a lot of sense to me-it seems that the 13.3" screens in the T2x series are very failure prone-either by dying backlights or LCD cables going bad.

You can get a used, tested LCD cable off of ebay for around $20 or so, disassemble the screen and replace it yourself. Just download the hardware maintenance manual from the Lenovo website for your model and it will give you step by step instructions on how to disassemble your T21.

Another alternative is to buy a used 14.1" screen from ebay (or a seller here) that has the top cover, hinges, and cable as one piece. Then you can just do a simple screen swap and everything should work perfectly.

Thanks for the informations.

But like I say, when screen is dark, I can see the image but without light.

And If I push the close top button at the right top, I have the same result.

The problem is only when I turn on theT21 and after the top opening.

Bad contact in this button could be another point with the cable.

I will disassemble it soon...

At least that eliminates the display itself as a cause, and surely will often solve the problem.

Unfortunately, this backlight problem can also be due to more complex causes - as I learned to my dismay with one of my 14.1" T21s. In may case, it appears to have something to do with the mainboard :(
