Internet time synchronization *20KB PICS*

#1 Post by Purcy » Fri Aug 10, 2007 8:26 am

We had some horrid storms here last night and lost power for many hours. I had powered down my Thinkpad when the storms started and this morning booted up. I noticed that the time was off by about 35 minutes on my taskbar, so opened up the clock to do an internet time synchronization. It defaults to time.windows.com and I got a message saying there was an error when trying to synch. I then went onto that website and it is an invalid website address. What do I do now? I can't seem to find a way to change the address for the time synching. I had manually reset my computer clock but why is the web address incorrect for the time, I'd think that would be part of Windows XP updates or something?

Double-click on the time on the lower right of the Notification Area. Choose the Internet Time tab and enter a different server address. I use time-b.nist.gov . You have to be logged on as Administator to effect this change.

I checked just now as I read this post. time.windows.com is working fine for me. So I suspect it is just temporary. You can use a different time server as Gom suggests and later try the windows one again. ... JDH

Thanks to you both. I did try to manually synch the time after opening the TIME/CLOCK thing. I did not know I could type in a new address. I am at work now and tried to manually synch the time using several addresses and it says an error had occured. I'm wondering if the firewall is stopping it. I use ZA (free) and I am going to check to see if I need to add the time synching app to my programs (or even how to do that)

I use a freeware program called Dsclock. You can configure it to display times from several different time zones simultaneously and have it synchronize the time with various time servers at specified intervals. Currently I'm using the server at tock.usno.navy.mil. A close one to you would be www.otc.psu.edu. It can be set to float on top of all other windows so it's visible at all times. I do that and set it in an area at the top of the screen where an application's title bar normally goes. Here's a couple of examples:

Hey that is cool Ray, thanks. I am going to use the Penn State Univ. address for my Windows time synching and see if it works. My clock is still correct from when I manually adjusted it this morning.

P.S., that's sweet that you want to know the time in Australia, is that due to Bill?

Okay Ray, I downloaded that little program and it is very cool. I have it set up in the corner like yours, hardly takes any space. I have it also set to cuckoo on the hour and chime on the half hour. Neat!! Thanks :D

I had forgotten about the chimes in the program and couldn't figure out why I was hearing something every so often on a "new" system that I was working on. I finally realized at 12 midnight what it was. :)

And no, the Oz clock is just because of the two times we went there. Taipei time is because of our corporate HQ.

OK, just for completeness, time.windows.com *was* unavailable earlier. Not when I tested it, but it was down when my router tried to sync. ... JDH

Well, that's good to know, I wasn't crazy. If you want a sweet little cuckoo clock (with optional date) download that app of Ray's.
