windows trying and failing to renew IP address

#1 Post by pipspeak » Fri Aug 10, 2007 1:06 pm

I curently use Access Connections to connect with my Intel 4695 AGN card and it works fine. But when my T61 resumes from sleep/standby I get a little icon in the taskbar that I discovered was windows XP trying (and failing) to renew the IP address. Looking at the networl connections status I see the wireless network is "acquiring IP address" and it stays that way until I restart my computer.

The wireless connection continues to function, however, so I'm wondering why this is happening even with the "allow windows to configure my wireless network connections" box unchecked. Surely windows should not even be trying to renew/acquire an IP address.

Any ideas how to fix it? I'm thinking it might be some firewall (Zonealarm) issue.

Check if your WiFi card has a setting, where it allows to be switched off to save power when not in use. Changing this setting (probably in Device Manager) may solve your problem.

I have seen similar problems before. I tried to use ipconfig from the command prompt, but just got an error message. What did work was to right-click on the wireless adapter in Network Connections and choose Repair.

EDIT: If it is a ZoneAlarm issue, that is easy enough to check. Just turn off the ZoneAlarm firewall and see if your connection now functions. To close ZoneAlarm I believe you just need to right-click on the ZoneAlarm icon in the Notification area and choose exit. I have seen ZoneAlarm do things like this in the past, but I have not used ZonaAlarm for the last couple of years.

tried repairing the wireless network and turning off the firewall and both had no effect. I still occasionally get the little "acquiring network address" symbol in the tray and it stays there until I shutdown. Even renewing/releasing the IP address through Access Connections does not get rid of it. Most odd.

Anyone else have any ideas?

Try RealBlackStuff's suggestion which I believe is basically covered in the following PDF.

I'll give that a go, too. Thanks.
