560X CMOS battery and boot problems

Hi,
I managed to get a used 6GB hard disk for my 560X. Pretty hard to find spares in India.

Will be installing it tomorrow.
I'm having problems while booting. It gives me the 163 and 161 errors and takes me to the Set Date and Time screen.
This happens each time I switch it on. I suspect a CMOS battery. Will try replacing this too. Do I need to get one from IBM or can I just use a locally available 2025?

Also, it refuses to switch on from battery - I have to use the mains adapter. But, once it's turned on, it can run from battery for over 90 minutes.
If I do a shutdown, it can be turned on without the mains within 30 minutes or so of switching off. Else, I need the mains. But if I just close the lid, and then reopen it after a while, it works properly, with very little battery drain.
( I've had this problem before my hard drive gave out, and I used to avoid shutdowns as much as I could).
Could this be due to the CMOS battery?

PS. None of the lights turn on when I open the lid, if it has been switched off. I don't know if this is normal. Connecting the mains supply turns on the Power LED and then the power switch works.

My local IBM dealer quoted Rs. 2000/- for a new CMOS battery, that's about US $ 50.
I think I'll be better off picking up a button cell locally.
Does anyone know how to build a CMOS battery for the 560X?

I had the same happen to my 560x, and wasn't about to pay $20 for a new battery

So, I took mine appart, and behold, it was just a regular watch battery, went down to radio shack (local electronics store) and got the exact same one for $4 canadian. Went home, took some tape too the leads & battery, shoved it back in, and everything was fine from thereon in

I did the same thing.
I yanked the leads out from the old battery and tried to solder it to the new one. Didn't work. That's some strange metal they use for those batteries. So I just used cellophane tape to hold the leads in contact with the cell and wrapped it up tight (insulation). Works like a charm now.

Soldering can also be dangerous with those batteries. Tape is much safer.

Be careful not to short the battery, though!

could someone tell me polarity on the batteries (wich side the red lead goes to)

The rule in electronics is that if there is a red and a black or white, the red wire is positive and the black or white wire is negative.

I need to know the polarity on the motherboard so that I can make a new battery for my laptop... Like wich side the red (+) wire goes to and wich one the black (-) wire goes to...

Let me know what model you need the info for. If it's the 560, I'll take a look at mine and let you know. I made a small indentation with a screwdriver when I took out the connector so that I remember which side connects where.
