ATI driver or driver by IBM??

#1 Post by daeojkim » Tue Oct 26, 2004 9:44 am

I was wondering if I should download catalyst driver from ATI and update it instead of using the one that came installed by IBM.

Is there any advantages of doing this? Anyone experienced any conflict from doing this?

Thanks.

P.S. This forum is great!! I am getting so much help and information. WOO HOO!!

What are the benefits? Better gaming mostly?

You can choose to get either better performance or better image quality.

I use drivers from DNA ( http://www.dna-drivers.nl/ ) since the IBM drivers don't support anything above 1280x1024 on the DVI dock connection. If you don't have a need for the higher resolution via DVI I'd go with IBM, otherwise I recommend DNA.

did you have to do anything special to get the drivers working with your card? read about that third party drivers dont like the mobility cards.

The dna drivers I downloaded knew about the FireGL in the inf so there was no special setup as far as I know. I just downloaded and installed.

Yeah, mostly gaming performance. They're pretty stable and updated everytime the official drivers are updated.

For the official ATI drivers, you need a program called "Mobility Modder" to enable those drivers to be installed for the mobility versions.

I don't know about the DNA drivers.. I had a serious problem when waking up from hibernation once. Like I got this really corrupt looking image...my screen was flickering and stuff with lots of artifacts all over the screen. I had to restart the computer to fix it.

So I am sticking with IBM's drivers.

I must say that I have seen what RCube describes at least once, and I was running the IBM drivers...

Yeah, I got that with IBMs drivers too. I am sticking with my Omega drivers. Have been running drivers from this guy for years. As always, if you like them please donate to help hiim continue his work. He does a great job on them and I really appreciate his efforts.

I use the Omega drivers too, no problems at all. I use them on all my systems - X22, T41p and a Shuttle SFF.

So omega or DNA drivers provide better speed than IBM's? Does anyone know roughly how much performance gain (in percentage) to expect?

I'm running the new DNA drivers, released yesterday, they include the updates specifically for the FireGL T2. My sys is running Half Life 2 superbly!

if it ain't broke don't fix it! i used to update drivers all the time just b/c new ones came out. guess what? unless your running graphics intensive stuff (and even then) it wont make a differene (or a very minor one).
