OK, whenever I buy a laptop, the first thing I do is to max out the memory. T42p can take 2GB, so I want to do just that.
Does anybody know how many memory slots T42p (14 inch models) have? Also, what is the configuration of 1GB on 2373-KTU? Is it 2 pieces of 512mb?
If I assume that T42p has 2 memory banks and KTU's 1 GB is made up of 2 pieces of 512mb, that would mean for KTU, I have to throw away both memories and buy 2 pieces of 1GB sticks. If it is just one piece 1GB memory, then I can just add another 1GB. For KUU, I can just throw away only one 512 piece (and sell it on ebay?) and then buy 2-pieces, and waste less money.....
Feel free to correct me if I am wrong somewhere.
Thanks
2373-KTU and 2373-KUU memory
There are two slots for RAM. If you are looking at an IBM spec, it is always for only filling 1 slot (they're not tacky/cheap like other companies.)
So if you see 1GB listed, that fills only 1 slot. (It's also the reason why the 1GB models are disproportionately more expensive than the 512MB ones; currently a 1GB stick is about 3.5 times more expensive.)

Re: 2373-KTU and 2373-KUU memory
I'd really like to get a KTU with 1GB RAM (as advertised in the TABOOK and the online spec pages) myself. However, I still have a slight doubt about the accuracy of the statements found in both these sources that this machine comes with 1GB RAM (see related thread: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=350). BTW, the TABOOK indeed states that the 1GB would come as a single DIMM as is standard with IBM. For the the question is whether it really comes with 1GB or rather with half that?choiyc wrote:Does anybody know how many memory slots T42p (14 inch models) have? Until I have the confirmation of someone who actually holds a KTU in their hands that the machine *does* indeed come with 1GB memory, I tend to believe that this is a mistake in both the TABOOK and IBM's online spec pages. Otherwise, the KTU is definitely a much better buy than the KUU, just because of the memory...

Christian,
I don't know why you continue to tie yourself up in knots over this matter. The TABOOK says it comes with 1GB RAM and has one slot available for upgrade. The product description page on the IBM marketing pages says it has 1GB RAM with one RAM solt available.
As I've told you before, do NOT use the HMM to check machine specs., use the TABOOK.
Just order the machine, if it doesn't meet the specs. when you get it, send it back!
Regards,
James

ALL T and R Series ThinkPads come with a single SODIMM... 256MB, 512MB, 1GB... there is always one slot on every model to allow for expansion. IBM caters to businesses primarily, and they don't want to toss smaller SODIMM pieces just to upgrade.
