#1 Post by rscosworth » Sun Aug 12, 2007 7:56 am

I have a t60, with 2gb and a T7400 CPU.

I have a 9 cell battery installed and vista ultimate.

Im lucky if i get 3 hours battery life - is this normal?

I would say it is normal. Vista definitely consumes more power than XP.

for some reason it bothers me when people posts questions like this and asking if it's normal.

First, how old is the battery you have and what's the capacity left.

Then are you using the system with WIFI on and full brightness on the LCD.

Are you just reading emails or playing music or dvds or what....

what's "normal" usage for you?

ciao,

8)

Q's like this don't bother me at all, cause it could have been me
From a long time TP user, the switch from a T4x to a T6x with the former on XP and latter on Vista is easily noticable when it comes to battery time.
In my opinion, there is no need to discuss all the harware first, since a t4x user will probably use the TP for the same stuff when upgrading to a t6x TP...therefore, the dramatic (imo) decrease in battery power can be easily noticed.
'tis more diffucult to notice or at the least pay tribute to the nice aero and raw computing power in the vista supported TPs.

Just these words man.

cheers :P

I'm sure it does use some more power but i wouldn't say it uses like 50% more or something. I get about the same battery lifewith my system between XP and Vista with the same exact parts.

I upgraded a few machines from XP to Vista and all of them showed about 15%-20% decrease in battery life. Turning off Aero, Sidebar, and Superfetch claimed some of the battery life back. Here's a list of machines:

T60 X 2
X61t X 2
D400

Well i'm not sure but i have Vista on a T42 (specs below) and i get almost 3:30mins with a 6 Cell battery which is almost new. (50whrs remaining). With a 9 cell i should get closer to 5hrs or more with Vista (no wifi and lower brightness)

I noticed an immediate reduction in battery life when I started using Vista Business on my T60. From being on the forums for a while and reading through the Vista forum this is pretty much the overall consensus, Vista=reduction in battery run time. I have yet to read of someones battery run time increasing

And I just read tom's post and will add that I do have discrete graphics ATI MOBILITY RADEON X1400.

A key question: which display size and graphics option do you have? Those are the biggest power consumption culprits.

My X61 gets 6+ hours on Vista, but a colleague's T61 (14.1" WS with Nvidia graphics) is in the 2-3 hour range. Integrated graphics would provide much more battery life.

I second Kyocera (Mike) and tomh009. Discrete graphics suck more juice from the battery than integrated ones.
"I've come a long, long way," she said, "and I will go as far,
With the man who takes me from my horse, and leads me to a bar."
The man who took her off her steed, and stood her to a beer,
Were a bleary-eyed Surveyor and a DRUNKEN ENGINEER.

Wait, isn't that a discrete graphics chipset? I recall that the integrated graphics are GMA 950 on the T60 ...
