What do you all think, did I make a good buy here? Should I expect to run into any problems out of the box?

Great Choice!

The only problems you "Should Expect" out of the box, is if you drop it from a distance of 4' from the table top to the floor while unpacking it.......

All kidding aside, you are really going to be happy with your new ThinkPad.

Also remember that many of the "problems" reported here are people that are coming from those few people who have issues with theirs, when Indeed the majority of ThinkPad users have no reason to post here due to the incredible reliability of the brand.

I have over 10 years of ThinkPad experience, along with over 120 ThinkPads that I deploy in my company and I cannot imagine "Not" using a ThinkPad.

Congratulations and Enjoy Yours..... :D

The only problem I can imagine is that Vista might run pretty slow with only 1GB of RAM. If that turns out to be the case, it's easy and cheap to upgrade to 2GB or more.

This is good news! I get so excited about purchases like this, but right after ordering I get worried that I might not be happy with the features I pick.

I plan to upgrade ram as soon as possible, I've heard its pretty easy with laptops, all along I had thought upgrading laptops was something left to professions. Is there certain brands that I should look out for when buying memory for the thinkpad? I guess as long as its PC2-5300 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM I am good to go?

Yes, this is very good news. When you buy into the Thinkpad family the amount of help and support resources are unbelievable. As an example I'm posting a link here to IBM/Lenovo Movies, that show you exactly how to install memory, and other user replaceable hardware.

Please ignore that this says it's for the 60 series, as they simply have not put out new movies for 61 series as they are exactly the same.

I also concur with the other poster and would suggest you upgrade to 2GB total memory as your budget permits.
I always spend a few more dollars to purchase Crucial Memory as it's the best and saves you from having to troubleshoot problems that can be caused by a faulty memory module. Especially since faulty memory can produce a wide variety of issues that are not easily diagnosed. Since memory is currently very inexpensive here is a link to both the Crucial Memory and one of the best web sites I've used with great discount prices. And example is last year I bought this same 1GB chip for my T60 and it was $86.00, this year it's only $50.00 see it here:

Hope this helps you.
Cheers...... :D

I was reading this forum about different configurations in the last two weeks and I am going to buy nearly the same configuration than you choosed. May be the only difference will be the HDD (100GB 7200rpms).

I was thinking about a T61p but as i am not a big gamer, at least i am not playing with the latest games, I do not need a good video card.

Have fun with your new lapy!

Thanks for the link. It seems to have dropped down a few dollars to $47.99 today. I just ordered myself a stick. :D

I wonder if it will get here before my laptop which was unexpectedly shipped yesterday.
