T20 900Mhz upgrade Questions fan wont spin?
I am wondering if i will be required to do a bios update for 900Mhz? i want to know so i dont tear it apart and replace the CPU before i get my floppy drive. Also could i possibly do this by way of CD? i dont feel safe using a floppy disc to install the Bios
Type: 2647-21u
i am encountering overheating issues with my computer, the fan does not spin outside of the POST. i allready installed the new Processor, but the fan should atleast kick on at some point though right? is there anything i can do other then run a windows utility? maybe on a bios level?

As i know, every BIOS version of the T20 can handle CPUs up to 1GHz. On the other hand, i'd strongly suggest upgrading to the latest BIOS version, because IBM fixed the possible 0175/CRC1 bug, that trashed one of my T20's. Changing the CPU on a T2x series is almost easier than on a desktop machine: pop up the keyboard, remove the fan, swap CPU, replace fan, replace keyboard, done.
From a bootable floppy you can make a bootable CD, Nero for example can do it.
As far as i know the flash utility does a CRC check on the BIOS data before actually programming it, so if the disc is bad, it won't hurt your BIOS.

Is there a specific reason that you are trying to update the BIOS with either a CD or floppy, instead of upgrading it within Windows?
With the T2x and newer machines, you don't have to boot to a BIOS disk, you can simply download the file and run it...it will reboot automatically, and walk you through the process.

If you are using the original T20 fan (FRU 04P3589), it's likely that it's overheating. I'd suggest getting a T21 or T22 fan for it...
If it starts up fine and shuts down later, then the CPU should be okay. Maybe you can boot into the OS and check the temperature if you use an external fan to cool it more. Not the most elegant solution, but it can produce answers. Opinions, anyone?

i setup the processor to run at "medium" in the bios, it seems to run better, but i noticed the fan stops spinning after it gets past bios, (turned it on and took off the keyboard)
theres a silver themal compound at best buy. would that help because right now i am using the tiny splotch that came with the CPU (ceramic based)and took off the rubber boot.
i think the heat is not dicipating onto the heatsync and the fan wont kick on because the thermometer is in the fan.
