Wireless and Fn+F5 problem

#1 Post by dg » Sun Aug 12, 2007 5:00 pm

I had not used my wireless connection for some time, so I don't know when the problem started, but when I wanted to turn it on yesterday, Fn+F5 wouldn't do it; it just toggles the bluetooth icon on and off. I connected wirelessly by opening Access Connections (v4.41) via Start, but now the green wireless icon is always flashing on and off, and there is nothing in Access Connections to disable it.

I found that Lenovo say that ThinkPad Hotkey Features must be updated to version 1.24.0603 or later To use the Fn+F5 radio control feature, so I downloaded and installed v1.31.0610, but it made no difference. (I don't know what version I had before, but I do regularly update with Software Installer).

In C:\drivers\win\hotkeys I can see I have the following versions:
On Screen display 3.40.01
TP Fullscreen magnifier 1.17
TP web navigation keys agent 1.11

but I can't find anything about Hotkey Features or Fn5. Should I be able to?

I have ticked "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings", but it makes no difference.

When I try to disable the wireless network, I get
"It is not possible to diable the connection at this time. The connection may be using 1 or more protocols that do not support PnP, or it may have been initiated by another user or the system account." (I am the only user and account)

When I try to repair it, I get
"The following action cannot be completed.
Disabling wireless network adapter.
Make sure your network adapter is properly installed."

My adapter is Intel wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI adapter.

I have uninstalled Access Connections, but it made no difference.

So my first problem is:
How do I get Fn+F5 to work?

And my second one:
How do I disable the wireless network when I don't want to use it?

I don't know if the following would be your problem or not since your wireless adapter is not listed on the page, but take a look.

Intel wireless adapters have limited connection methods and cannot be controlled via Fn + F5 - ThinkPad

The Hotkey driver will get you fn+F5 function, but it will only be able to turn on and off the wireless radio. Access Connection expands that menu so you can connect to profiles you saved with out opening the program. I would go and download the wireless card driver, hotkey driver and Access connections. Reinstall hotkey driver, then the wireless card driver then Access Connections and see if this helps. It really doesn't take much for one of these programs to get messed up.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.

Thanks GomJabbar and Stargate199, and also MJ, who posted a detailed method in
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... c&start=60

I tried uninstalling intel wireless via Control Panel/device manager (as it doesn't appear in add/remove, unlike intel wired), but each time I rebooted it reinstalled itself. So I tried rolling back the driver (from v 1.2.4.1 to 1.2.4.35 (dated 28/2/05!)), and F+Fn5 now worked!

I now keep getting a popup from the taskbar when I logon telling me it is disconnected, which is annoying, and for some reason it has added a 3 to its name to "Wireless connection 3".

I might try updating the drivers and reinstalling Access Connections later, when I have more time.
