requirements for linux installation

#1 Post by evy » Tue Oct 26, 2004 12:19 pm

Hi,
I just posted this same question to the linux-list but I thought more people would see it here.
I have (almost) decided to by a T42 PM 1.6 512/40 DVD/CDW WLAN 14" (UC2FWSW), but I'm a bit worried it's not enought if I want both WindowsXP and Linux on it. Is it?

I have both running on a 2373-gvu which is t42p 1.8, 512, 60GB, DVD/CDRW / WLAN / 14" (1400x1050). It runs very well and I have everything working.

The hard drive is a little tight but it'll be fine if you make one of the partitions larger than the other and you got rid of the recovery partition (10 for windows and 30 for linux or vice versa).

PM me if you need more help once you get the system.

Ask yourself about your Windows needs and your Linux needs. If both sets of needs are very heavy, then dual-booting works.

What I do, on the other hand, is run VMware in my XP Pro host. Then I have a Linux machine, a Windows 2000 machine, and Windows NT machine and a couple of others. All the machines run well, and depending on memory, two at a time plus host machine. I use half the 60Gb drive to hold all this. Gaming is pretty tough in a virtual machine and I don't do that. Otherwise, the virtual machines work very well. It's just a different way of working to dual-booting.

Yeah, getting linux on there is now a whole lot easier since they changed the way they do the partitions on the T42. I just nuked the hidden partition, installed BootMagic, then installed Suse onto a parition I made after resizing the /dev/hda1 partition to give me some more space at the end of the drive for a reiserfs and a swap partition. Worked like a charm.
