A31 White Screen On Boot Up

#1 Post by n1nj4Lo » Mon Aug 13, 2007 2:13 am

Okay it doesn't happen a lot but every so often after being shut down inproperly or I guess the laptop being used way too much and pressed to its peak, When I go to reboot it just won't even load the Bios all I'll get is a blank white screen with a lot of black vertical lines up and down the LCD Screen...

If I unplug it from the ac adapter or mess around with it while it's plugged in I'll get it to come back on and load the Bios and properly boot up without seeing the big bad white screen...

I was just wondering what type of problem this might be, If it's normal with this series and how can I go about repairing/fixing it to where this problem doesn't happen again anymore?

Thanks in advance for all help, support and advice..

Don't like seeing unanswered posts...

What causes you to "shut down improperly" in the first place? Is there already some sort of video problem which makes you press and hold the power button to turn off? And what exactly do you do when you "mess around with it" that gets the laptop going again?

The problem could be a couple of things. There may be an issue with the video chip on the motherboard. I have two A31 systems which display random blocks of color and/or lines on the screen when the chassis is flexed one way or the other. This is also a fairly common problem with the T4x systems as well. Assumed cause is a broken solder joint underneath the video chip. Homebrew remedy is to use a heat gun and (hopefully) get the solder to reflow without burning up the board. Other cause could be a broken/loose connection of the video cable. That would generate the display problems you see but probably should not affect booting of the system. Lastly, it may be a over heating issue that is giving you problems (as you say the system is being used too much).

Yes sometimes I might usually have to force restart from the lag and the os locking up and freezing on me, And when I can't seem to even kill enough processes in task manager... Then I force it to restart.... Right now there is no cooling pad for it but I am majorly looking into getting one or two that I've seen, Two because one is a home type cooling pad/laptop rack and the second one is more portable both are dual fanned...

I have a Gateway 450SX4 laptop. Thing runs hotter than my stove so I got an Antec cooling pad for it. Definitely helped to lower the system temperature. On the other hand, when I put a T23 that was transcoding a video on the pad, the CPU temp went up. Don't know if an A31 would be affected the same way. If at all possible, I would open up the system and apply some new thermal grease between the CPU and heatsink. Also you may be able to throttle back the CPU speed and see if that helps.

However, given the couple of A31/A31p systems that I have and the threads I've seen here, I'm leaning towards the motherboard and/or video chip being the source of the problem.
