How Do You Look Up FRU#s?

How Do You Look Up FRU#s?

I tried going to the ThinkPad web site to lookup FRU part numbers that I found on parts sitting around, but when I put a valid FRU# it comes back and says ‘Sorry, no items found’.

Is there a place I can go to inquire about FRU#s? I want to know the description of the item and what generation(s) of IBM it goes to.

I'm betting some of you IBMers knows where to look up FRUs.

BTW, you guys have been great with help so far.

Google often works. Just search for the FRU number that you have. A supplier of the part will be found with Google, and from there you can get a description of the part.

I can go to Google, Froogle and even www.ask.com but since IBM FRU# are for IBM stuff shouldn't IBM have a cross reference or list?

There has to be a way within the IBM web site to do FRU look ups. It seems sort of backwards to go out to the WWW to look up an IBM specific part number.

I agree Google is good but also try Ebay. Most of the places that Google shows do not include a picture of the part. On Ebay you can usually find a picture to match the part you are looking for.

Both work for me

I think you have to work for IBM, or Lenovo, or be one of their partners to have access to that. I would love to be proven wrong though. It used to be better when IBM was at the helm. I could go to the Maintenance Parts site and look for spare parts. That has all but dried up now. :(

You can go to the Service parts list index to get a list of parts that go into the ThinkPads. This information is also available in the Hardware Maintenance Manuals. However to try and match existing parts in your inventory, this does not work very well.
