R40 and 7200rpm hard drive

#1 Post by silverfirebird » Mon Aug 13, 2007 3:49 pm

Will a 7200rpm work on a R40 2682 model? I can't stand this 4200rpm hard drive performance. It was ok for a while but now I'm starting to see the slow performance.

I'm considering buying a Hitachi 60GB 7200rpm hard drive. I want to make sure it can work.

Yep, should work with no problems. I ran a 7200rpm in my R40 for quite a while (until the motherboard gave out). You might want to also bump up your RAM to 1GB.

Good luck with your machine

I plan on upgrading the RAM in the near future. I think this model can go only up to the 1GB and the Pentium M models goes up to 2GB. If I could put 2GB in my R40 2682 then that will be great!

*edit*
I ordered the 60GB now it's on its way.

It'll be like a whole new machine.

It's almost becoming like a new machine. I just upgraded the RAM today from 512MB to 1GB. I ran Memtest and it passed.

7200 RPM on R40

#6 Post by eghuff » Mon Aug 20, 2007 6:42 pm

I've been running a 7200 RPM Hitachi drive on my 1G R40 Pentium M 2.4 Ghz for over a year. I do work on a local DB2 database, so the extra speed is helpful. I bought the bay holder for a hard drive in order to copy the preload to the new drive, though I have never bothered to get the recovery partition migrated.

I got my 7200rpm hard drive. I notice a difference in performance. Installing Windows Updates is quicker than before. The Windows installation was smoother too.

Yes people tend to only look to the CPU for performance, but that's only one part.

Yeah. It was easy to replace the RAM and the hard drive. I am going to replace the CPU in the near future.

Definitely go for the 7200rpm drive. As upgrades go, this is the most cost effective performance enhancer you can get. The RAM and processor can follow...
