will T-T41 MB (with gigabit) work in T-40 (with 10/100)
Is a T41 MB with Gigabit compatible with T40 MB with just 10/100? When I do switch (t41 for t40) I get garbled video.

This seems strange to me. Any display (along with it's cable and inverter) should work with any T4x motherboard.
I'd say the new T41 motherboard is defective. Does it work properly with an external monitor?
P.S. Welcome to the forum!

T40 is a 2373-7CU. T41 MB is FRU 93P3307. I have since gotten MB to work sporaticly but with signifcantly distored/garbled video. I think MB is a bust. The MB is used off-bay (guy said MB good just USB ports a little flacky) and I guess not worth anything.
It appears that the Gigabit and 10/100 ethernets are not issue, so I will get new gigabit ethenet MB and try it out (FRU 91P7186 for T40)

i thought even the T40 came with Gigbabit ethernet? i thought that was a standard feature of the T4x series. Eitherway, maybe the motherboard he sold you was bad. The garbled video might be a symptop of flexing of the motherboard:

The T40 came with either 10/100 or 10/100/1000 ethernet. But this doesn't sound like it's anything to do with the network setup - sounds like a dud MB, as evidenced by the inop USB - this is usually a prelude to failure of other components, based on the postings on this forum.

Thinkpad Motherboard
OK - got new T40 Motherboard now in place and I get the following: Four cycles of four short beeps and a blank screen - IBM site says System board (Security chip). What does this mean?

Wow, you are having a string of bad luck with system boards, where are you getting them from? That code means that the security chip on the system board (it is soldered on) is malfunctioning or not present when expected by BIOS. The security chip can be replaced if you have a decent hot air soldering station, or there are companies that will perform that service. I'd send the board back to the seller and find a better supplier.

Pic inside

Small square chip w/ 8 legs. I believe it's labeled ATMEL 24RF08.
I stand corrected. See the following link for a picture and models with TCPA.
