T61p graphics problems
The "problem" in question only rears its ugly head when two sticks of ram are installed.

I'm not sure if I have this problem or not, but using graphics drivers from laptopvideo2go.com and playing CoD4 and Crysis with the newest drivers will often cause the system to crash within 5 minutes of playing. However, the graphics drivers from Lenovo and Microsoft Update seem to be pretty stable and a lockup using these drivers is much more rare than on the 3rd party drivers (although it has crashed before).

I just got my T61p on 2/28/08 (ordered on 2/24/08) and I seem to have a similar issue as described in this thread.
When I play games my machine will shut down randomly as if the power was pulled.
Sometimes it runs for an hour and sometimes it shuts down after a minute and sometimes after about 10 minutes.
I've never seen any errors or BSOD yet, just total shutdown.
So, if my issue is the same then no, they did not totally fix the problem

Just wanted to update for those who might be still interested in this issue.
In the lenovo forums one of the Lenovo members said they were able to find out why the machines have issues and are working on fix. He said he might have more information later this week but didn't say anything about what the fix might be.

Which Lenovo forums? You work for them? Sounds promising.. The problem hasn't bothered me to the point where I feel obliged to return the machine but if there's a software fix, I'm up for it.webdtc wrote:Just wanted to update for those who might be still interested in this issue.

Just another point of pseudo-data
Just (2 hours ago) got a T61p with the 2.5GHz 9300 chip (6MB cache). I downloaded 3DMark 2006 and ran the tests it would let me. Their web site says it scored 3668 3DMarks which is not too impressive, but I didn't buy this for games. (Portal might be fun...)
Ran without problems so far as I can tell... couldn't even hear it cooling fans going (I'm posting from my older Dell Inspiron 8600 which probably needs its vents dusted as it pretty much always is making noise these days...)
Is there any more sustained/in-depth test that can be done without having to buy a game and invest the time in playing it? Also without giving 3DMark their US$20
I was also wondering about its need for DirectX 9 drivers. Felt a little weird installing that on a brand new Vista system...

finally...some shed of light...quote from lenovo forum (http://forums.lenovo.com/lnv/board/mess ... ng&page=49)
yeyy..thinkpads.com was mentioned there...Mark_Lenovo wrote:
All,
Here is the update you are looking for:
Late last year, our attention was drawn to several ongoing discussion threads on Thinkpads.com and Notebookreview.com concerning lockups, crashes and blue screens experienced on some T61p Thinkpads while playing 3D intensive games. We reached out to several forum members to provide assistance with service and to evaluate their systems. Lenovo product engineering worked to recreate the symptoms while following the discussion in the forums, where members continued to collaborate , sharing the results of their own tests, and narrowing the conditions down to running 3D intensive applications with 2 memory modules populated.
Upon analysis, some T61p system boards appear to have higher sensitivity to a condition in which the power draw of the GPU in conjunction with fully loaded memory bus creates a voltage drop condition, which in turn produces the noted symptoms. To resolve, engineering has revised the value of a discrete component to enhance voltage stability.
This update is included for all new T61p systems built on or after 03/20/08 . Due to differences in usage, memory config, and board tolerances, only a portion of previously built T61p systems may ever experience this condition. Owners who have experienced these symptoms should seek service at their convenience, after working with support to rule out any other potential causal factors.
Here is the link to the Official Techni ... rt number. (http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-69684)
A sincere thanks to members of our online communities for their patience and support in working closely with us to resolve these symptoms.
This is good news for some, but unfortunately, many of us who have had this issue since last year do not have the motherboard that this tech tip mentions.
The tech tip says the fix applies to motherboards with the FRU 42W7877. However, many of us (myself included) have a different motherboard, FRU 42W7653.
Who else has the 42W7653 motherboard? I think there are a lot of us having this issue with this motherboard.
